Flashback Friday

Nico, I'm not saying

Get Flash Player to see this clip.

This version of the Gordon Lightfoot song, I'm Not Saying, is unique in that it is said to feature both then lover Brian Jones and session player Jimmy Page on guitar. It wasn't Nico's favorite track but it was a start for her post modeling turned singing career. She claimed that producer Andrew Loog Oldham (also The Rolling Stones manager) was trying to make her sound like another Marianne Faithfull for this track on his own Immediate label. Nico appeared on Ready, Steady, Go, British TV's Friday night mod-scene showcase performing this song. The flip, The Last Mile, is not as strong but still is quite charming. This is the single that Andy Warhol brought into The Factory to play for everyone proclaiming he would be bringing her in to meet the Velvet Underground.

From The Mind Of Adi #41: Matt Ragland’s (Nelo) Firsts

Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.

Today: Matt Ragland’s Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired Matt Ragland from Nelo. Catch Nelo’s poignant folk-pop ditties at La Zona Rosa next Thursday; the show is a release party for their latest EP Two Years Ago.

  • 1st favorite song: "I Just Called To Say I Love You" - Stevie Wonder. I wanted to be able to sing like that so bad... When you're a little kid, you can kind of trick yourself into thinking that you can. I did my best!

From The Mind Of Adi #40: Richard Henry’s Firsts

Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.

Today:  Richard Henry’s Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired local DJ Richard Henry. You can catch him spinning the beats at a number of upcoming events in town, including the 2 Live Crew show on June 25th at The Mohawk.

1st favorite song: “Blueberry Hill” by Fats Domino. I used to sit and listen to the radio when I was little and always try to pick up shortwave radio stations that catered to songs of that time.
