THE FREE WEEK 2010 LINEUP IS HERE

So goddamn excited about this years Free Week (Notice how I capitalized "Free Week" and not "god?" It's THAT amazing a week!).

I started this bad boy some years ago (maybe 6 or so?) at Emos as a way to get people to come out during the slow time of the year when nobody was touring, as well as just bring something fun to do when everyone was still off work and the kids out of school for the end of the holidays. It grew from there within Emos, but for some reason, other clubs never really tried to do it. When I left Emos after being there almost a decade, I kept the ball rolling and started doing it at a number of venues, including some of Transmission's main rooms: Mohawk, Red 7, Club Deville, etc. Emos, of course, had continued to book it themselves and do their own version of Free Week and a few other clubs did a few free shows last year, but THIS year it seems like everyone has jumped in feet first, which is killer. Parish said they're doing free week, Stubbs mentioned maybe doing their inside room for free week, Beerland is doing some as well, Beauty Bar is free all week (djs AND live music), our rooms (Red 7, Mohawk, Deville) and others are all participating and now it really IS becoming our local version of Sxsw with all local bands playing up and down the street. You can pop into one room for an hour and run to another club to catch another band. Red River and beyond has become ground zero for the live music lovers of local music in town and it's a great way for them to showcase themselves and clubs to showcase their space as well....all with NO cost to the fans. It's a giant party and everyone is invited, which was always the points and really cool to see it happen this way! This thing seems unique to Austin. The same way 1st Thursday on South Congress and other sort of organic event happen in Austin around local businesses, press and artists, without the support of the city or support of a big business, this continues to keep happening in Austin and the reason we all move here and stay. Shit I was born here and still see no reason to leave. Events like this are part of that...

We thank the bands so much for donating their time and hopefully they'll have as much fun doing it as everyone else will. See you guys Jan 1st through Jan 10th!

-Graham Williams

From The Mind Of Adi #80: Aasim Syed’s Firsts

Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.

Today: Aasim Syed’s Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired local photographer, regular event planner, and all-around badass Aasim Syed. Syed has put together stellar shindigs such as this past August’s aptly named Aasim Birthday Party and last year’s equally appropriately titled Aasim Holiday Party. The latest installment of the Holiday Party takes place this Saturday at United States Art Authority, next to Spider House, and features legendary Austin bands like Windsor For The Derby and …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, along with current favorites such as The Black.

1st favorite song: Pointer Sisters’ “Pinball Number Count” from Sesame Street.

Become a Transmission Intern or join the Transmission street team!

Want to be involved with Transmission? We're offering internships, or, for those not eligible for an internship or looking for less of a time commitment, come join our street team! Here's the info for both:

Transmission Entertainment seeks Spring 2010 interns to help with day-to-day tasks of running a creative events agency. Transmission Entertainment is an independent Austin organization that is known for hosting and producing events like Fun Fun Fun Fest, Mess with Texas, and the Jelly NYC pool parties in Brooklyn and San Francisco. TE is also known for booking shows at The Mohawk, St. Davids Episcopal, Red 7, Club de Ville, Lamberts, The Compound, Waterloo Park, Fiesta Gardens, and many garages and backyards around Austin. Transmission is looking for a few highly capable interns to help in this effort for 10-15 hours a week.  Tasks include (but are not limited to): assisting the Transmission staff with events, relevant research for events, assisting with managing the street team, designing fliers and posters, occasionally assisting on site at events, helping us update our social networking sites, assisting with sponsorship and sales, responsibilities associated with SXSW, receiving (and reading in full) Graham William’s “People of Wal-Mart” emails, and having a lot of fun.  We want this to be educational and productive for interns, and you can expect lots of learning, hands-on experience, access to food, beverages and rock n roll, as well as many other magical things.

Details:

-This internship starts in January 2010, ends in May 2010, and is unpaid.

-College students preferred but not required.

-School credit preferred but not required.

-Must be great with online stuff and social networking sites.

-Make sure to let us know of any experience with events/booking/music industry.

-Design knowledge is a plus but not required; however we would love to take on a design and graphics intern if possible, so if that sounds like something you could do, please let us know in your cover letter.

-Let us know if you have an SLR camera/any show photography experience (we're always looking for in house people to document events and shows).

-Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel as well as Google Docs.

-Must live in Austin and have transportation to our offices (even if that’s just a great proficiency at the Austin bus systems—you just need to be able to get to the office)

Please send a cover letter and resume to Zoe Cordes Selbin, Internship Coordinator, at

Do you want to get into Transmission shows for free? Always be in the know about cool upcoming events and gain some promotions experience? Then become one of the founding members of the newly re-launched Transmission Entertainment Street Team.  The team is not just some loose group of people—we consider our street team part of the Transmission family, and we want your input on the best ways to promote, so we’ll host regular meetings so we can become a community and you can really help shape the way the team works! As part of the street team, we’ll have you flier and poster around your area of Austin, but we’ll also have you go beyond that—working with Twitter, Myspace, and Facebook, and of course word of mouth, to promote to your networks and help us reach a wide audience of Austinites. In return, we’ll give you access to all of Transmissions many great shows, parties, and events, as well as a chance to work with, learn from, and provide input to one of Austin’s premier creative events agencies. We’ll give you a lot of swag and great experiences—but we expect some work in return, so no flakes, please! If you’re interested in joining, please email the Street Team Coordinator, Zoe Cordes Selbin, at with your basic information.
