From The Mind Of Adi: Hard Stuff presents Eagle Claw [Red 7 / May 2011]

I am pleased to debut the first installment of Hard Stuff, a new series focusing on the metal, hardcore, and punk bands that grace the stage at the many fine rock ‘n’ roll establishments in town. The project is a collaboration between Austin Music Weekly, beloved venues like Red 7, Piggy, and myself. All of us firmly believe in the vitality of the aforementioned genres and feel these unsung heroes deserve to be noticed. After all, why should dance-pop get all the attention?

Without further ado, here’s Eagle Claw at Red 7 on May 24th.

From The Mind Of Adi: Andrew Leeper’s Firsts

Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.

Today: Andrew Leeper’ Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired Andrew Leeper from Markov. Catch this exciting local band’s explosive post-punk concoctions tomorrow night at Red 7.

  • 1st favorite song: My dad actually had a pretty good record collection but for some strange reason, the song I loved as a kid was “The Gambler” by Kenny Rogers. I’d play it over and over and over. “You gotta know when to hold ‘em, Know when to fold ‘em, Know when to walk away, and Know when to run.” MenWhoLookLikeKennyRogers.com

  • 1st favorite musician or band: In middle school, I discovered the Dead Milkmen. Some of their songs were funny but not in a novelty song way. They were kind of a gateway to the bands that all the older skate rats were into. A sense of humor was rare in the 80s punk/HC scene and I loved the way they didn’t take it too seriously. I wore out my copy of “Big Lizard in My Backyard” to the point and actually had to operate on my cassette with scotch tape.

From The Mind Of Adi: Eva Mueller’s Firsts

Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.

Today: Eva Mueller’ Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired Eva Mueller from One Hundred Flowers and the Stem and Leaf collective. Catch One Hundred Flowers’ delightful indie-pop ditties this Saturday at whitesiren’s A Local Night For Local People shindig at The Ghost Room.

  • 1st favorite song: I was lucky to have grown up with parents who liked good music and were always listening to their vinyls. I'm pretty sure that the first song that really made a lasting impact on me was The Moody Blues’ "Nights in White Satin" (I had a flare for the dramatics). I remember my mom always saying this was a real trip whenever it would come on the oldies station. Which is hilarious because I started watching Roseanne on Netflix recently (don't judge me!) and the 14 year old, Becky, gets drunk with her friend and puts this vinyl on and tells her friend the exact same thing about it being what her parents call a "trip". It was a total "LOL" moment.

  • 1st favorite song: My first favorite song was "Volcano" by . It inspired me to gyrate at the tender age of five. So did Rod Stewart's "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?"

From The Mind Of Adi: Nathan Christ’s Firsts

Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.

Today: Nathan Christ’s Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired Echotone director Nathan Christ. The documentary explores Austin’s ever-burgeoning music scene, bringing to light the various challenges musicians face in an oft-changing landscape. The concept for the film was hatched at an ATX Converge gathering in 2008, so it’s only fitting that the latest installment of the event (this Sunday at The Mohawk) serves as a release party for it. You’ll be able to catch quite a few of the artists featured in the documentary, including Sunset, The White White Lights, Dana Falconberry, and Machine, at the shindig -- RSVP here.

Echotone premieres in town at the Austin Film Festival on Saturday (at The Alamo Ritz at 1 p.m.); a second screening will take place at The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum’s Texas Spirit Theater on Tuesday the 26th at 10 p.m.

  • 1st favorite song: My dad tried to ween me onto Bob Dylan from a very early age. I have a foggy memory of the two of us listening to "Visions of Johanna" and "Idiot Wind." An 8-year old can't possibly understand what a failed, bitter marriage feels like, but "Idiot Wind" had an intensity I related to.
