From The Mind Of Adi #19: JP from Built By Snow’s Firsts

Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.

Today: JP's Firsts! I hope you enjoyed my personal Firsts, James Petralli from White Denim's Firsts, and Chris Rose's Firsts. This time, we examine what inspired JP from Built By Snow through the years. Built By Snow celebrates the release of MEGA this Saturday at Club de Ville.

We interviewed Built By Snow this past Monday evening at Arcade UFO -- check it out via Roxwel's site.

  • 1st favorite song: Every song in Back to the Future..."The Power of Love," "Johnny B. Goode," "Earth Angel," "Mr. Sandman" - I was so addicted to that movie, those songs were burned into my brain!

  • 1st favorite musician or band: The Cars - Their first album was also the first cassette I ever owned... my Dad was a big fan and got me hooked early on.

  • 1st cassette tape purchased: The first cassette that I bought with my own money was probably some late 80s rap... maybe Geto Boys or something.

  • 1st favorite video game: For Atari, I loved Super Breakout. For Nintendo, there are too many to list... but here are a few anyway: Contra, Kid Icarus, Mega Man, Mike Tyson's Punchout, Super Mario Bros 2.
  • 1st video game console: Atari 2600 - I got it at a garage sale, and it changed my life forever!
  • 1st concert attended: Debbie Gibson - Electric Youth Tour... I thought she would be my girlfriend one day.

  • 1st concert attended in Austin (if different from above): My first real "rock" concert in Austin was Weezer at Liberty Lunch during their Pinkerton tour... and it is still my favorite show ever!

  • 1st CD purchased: I think it might have been In Utero by Nirvana... I was late getting a CD Player, it felt like everyone else already had one for years when I finally made the switch from cassettes.
  • 1st recording: I recorded a really low quality demo with my high school band the rascals... we had a cassette four track and a lot of ideas! We also had no drummer, so borrowed a kit did my best drummer imitation for the recording. We gave those tapes out to everyone at school... there are probably some still floating around....... jeez, I hope not.
  • 1st live performance: At a local Skate shop in town called Blondies back in 1997 with my band the raskals. We were kind of sort of terrible.
  • 1st "something" I didn't ask you about: The first time music made me feel really cool... I was 16, stole my first cigarette from a friend at work, and smoked it in my car on my way home while listening to a Chuck Berry cassette tape. I have never felt any cooler than I did that night.
