Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te
happened.
Today: John Farmer's Firsts! I hope you enjoyed my personal Firsts, James Petralli from White Denim's Firsts,
Chris Rose's Firsts, JP from Built By
Snow's Firsts, and Lauren Larson
from Ume's Firsts. This time, we examine what inspired John Farmer
from What Made
Milwaukee Famous through the years.

- 1st favorite song: "Pour Some Sugar On Me" by Def
Leppard. It was the first song that ever really made me think,
"Holy Shit!" Sad to say, it doesn't really kindle those kind of emotions
anymore. When it first came out, I was a broke, elementary school kid. I
didn't have the money to buy the cassette, so I sat by the TV with my
jam box waiting to record it on MTV. I probably rocked
out to that crappy recording for six months before I got it for
Christmas.
- 1st favorite musician or band: My first favorite, "totally ape-shit
for" band was probably the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I was
completely blown away when I heard "Higher Ground" off of Mother's
Milk. Later when I found out they were the band in the movie
Thrashin', that solidified their coolness for me.
- 1st album recorded on a cassette tape: On Christmas, I got two
cassettes with my first jam box. They were U2's War and the
soundtrack for the movie Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo.
Yes, I did have multiple pairs of parachute pants
- 1st cassette tape purchased: I was lucky growing up having a sister
who dated "skater kids". They would make mix tapes for her, and I would
dub them. This one specific tape had The Misfits,
Camper Van Beethoven, Dead Milkmen,
Fugazi, fIREHOSE, Strawberry
Zots, etc. I went to the Hastings in Wichita
Falls to try and find these bands. The only tapes I found were The
Misfits' Legacy of Brutality, fIREHOSE's Ragin' Full
On and Fugazi S/T. I still like to think I was the coolest kid in
6th grade.
- 1st concert attended: The first concert I was forced to go to was
The Beach Boys. They played our city fair. I'm not sure
how cool I thought they were when I was 11. The first show I ever left
Wichita Falls to see was Danzig. My sister and her
boyfriend took me and my friend Steed to Dallas to see them at the
Bomb Factory. I thought Danzig would be terrifying
live, but they were nothing after watching the opening band The
Genitorturers. They were more disturbing rather than
terrifying. I'm not going to say much. Just Youtube them.
- 1st CD purchased: Pennywise S/T. I really don't
plan on revisiting that one any time soon.
- 1st album downloaded: I only recently became acquainted with the
computer about a year ago. I'm not necessarily a digital boy. I believe
it was Brenton Wood's The Oogum Boogum Song.
- 1st recording: That would have been with my first band
Three-Legged Race. It was me, Stephen
Huff and Gary Wiseman. Gary went on to be in
the band Bowling For Soup. Chris
Bernie from that band did our old demo recordings.
- 1st live performance: It was at MY 8th grade talent show. Some
friends and I played Helmet "Unsung". After we played the song, our
guitarist walked off stage still plugged into his amp. That pulled the
amp over, which was connected to the powerstrip, which was connected to
the other amps, which fell over and toppled the drums. It was pretty bad
ass.
- 1st national (or international) tour: It was probably about 5 years
ago. Michael (Kingcaid) and I booked it ourselves. If
you've never booked a tour for an unknown band, which most likely you
haven't, it is a TOTAL pain in the ass. No one gives a shit, and no one
will call you back. But, in the end it was absolutely worth it. Nothing
like playing for an average of 4 people every night.
- 1st "something" I didn't ask you about:
My first cool haircut was a chili bowl. Plan on seeing me sport another
one of those babies in the '09.
