From The Mind Of Adi #25: Marcos Cabral and Jacques Renault from Runaway’s Firsts

Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.

Today: Marcos Cabral and Jacques Renault from Runaway’s Firsts! I hope you enjoyed my personal Firsts, James Petralli from White Denim’s Firsts, Chris Rose’s Firsts, JP from Built By Snow’s Firsts, Lauren Larson from Ume’s Firsts, John Farmer from What Made Milwaukee Famous’ Firsts, Martín Perna from Ocote Soul Sounds’ Firsts, and Adrian Quesada’s Firsts. This time, we examine what inspired Marcos Cabral and Jacques Renault from Runaway through the years. Catch Runaway at Beauty Bar this Saturday the 28th.

  • 1st favorite song:

Marcos: Carmen Miranda's "Mama Yo Quiero" I think I was around six years old when I first heard this on the cartoon Tom and Jerry. It used to drive me crazy...in a good way.

Jacques: Beethoven's “Violin Concerto, Movement #3.” My mom would only have the classical radio station on and it was the only one I could really recognize.

  • 1st favorite musician or band:

Marcos: Kiss. I didn't really like their music (still don't). I just like how Gene Simmons looked like a vampire. When I was seven years old I was a Gene Simmons / Vampire for Halloween.

Jacques: The first big concert I went to was Def Leppard. My friend had tickets and it was at the Capitol Center. It was kinda cool I must admit but I only knew their music from my sisters. That and Pink Floyd, The Cure, my first band that I actually liked and saw must have been Fugazi later that year...

  • 1st album recorded on a cassette tape:

Marcos: I bought all vinyl until the 5th grade. That's when I discovered Mr. Magic's Rap Attack show on WBLS here in New York. I would stay up late and record it under my blankets in bed with my boom box. I would use the pause button on the tape recorder to edit out the commercials and I would actually edit stuff on beat.

Jacques: I had Michael Jackson's Thriller backed by the Rocky soundtrack.

  • 1st cassette tape purchased:

    Marcos: Run DMC

Jacques: cassingle - MC Hammer - 2 Legit 2 Quit

  • 1st concert attended:

Marcos: Not sure which came first, but all in the same year I think: Samantha Fox, Run DMC, Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard. This was in 87/88.

Jacques: Def Leppard but in 1992 I think.

  • 1st album downloaded:

Marcos: Legally or illegally? Legally: Bernard Badie Time Reveals...about two months ago

Jacques: A few years ago I got all excited about Limewire. I downloaded a few things that I had already on vinyl so I could burn them to CD and listen to them at work -- didn't have the iPod. I downloaded something and my computer got a 'kernel panic' and I didn't download anything for years after. Now I frequently use Beatport, and download digital downloads but rarely download illegally unless a friend sends me something.

  • 1st personal band/project:

    Marcos: Marcos Cabral.

Jacques: I grew up playing the violin, then the viola the trumpet and then the guitar. I had a few bands in school. Covered a lot of grounds, styles, and then to being behind 2 turntables. So I played in alone with a piano accompanist, Orchestras, jazz bands, and punk bands. Titles of groups are as ridiculous as you can imagine.

  • 1st recording:

Marcos: The stuff I did for Trapez Records in Cologne, Germany.

Jacques: used to record with a mic when I played all of the above. Aside from the demo cassette, my first proper recording was the 7" release of my band from DC, 'Winterbrief' in 1997. Didn't do a dance 12" until 2001.
  • 1st live performance:

Marcos: When I was 14 I started DJing at "Teen Discos" in the Catskills (upstate New York).

Jacques: I find myself saying the same things a bit too early. I was young playing in front of groups and compete a lot. My biggest accomplishment when I was younger was playing Carnegie Hall when I was in High School. I played the viola in an Orchestra.
  • 1st national (or international) tour:

Marcos: In 2007, Jacques and I took our Runaway name across Europe. On that trip we DJ'd in Istanbul, Paris, Dresden, Berlin, and Dublin.

    Jacques: Yup there it is.

  • 1st “something” I didn’t ask you about:

Marcos: The first movie that I kissed a girl during was Sixteen Candles.

Jacques: my first skateboard was a vision gator.
