From The Mind Of Adi #35: James Moody’s Firsts

Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.

Today: James Moody’s Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired James Moody, co-owner of The Mohawk through the years. Moody is a legend to many of us but anything I write about him (genius, icon, did I say legend already?) would not sum him up as well as this blurb on his own Facebook page – “rambler. rhinestone cowboy. wanderer. spelunker. spirit animal. chief. home skillet. mule. mega. tonto.” Enough said.

  • 1st favorite song: Styx - “Renegade”

  • 1st favorite musician or band: The Highwaymen

  • 1st Vinyl purchased: Talking Heads, I think, or Led Zeppelin.

  • 1st album recorded on a cassette tape: First mix tape – Memorex purple - I remember most of the tunes:
Dead Milkmen - “Taking Retards To The Zoo”
Some punk band I forgot – “Society”
Hoodoo Gurus – “Cheese And Crackers” (awesome)
    PIL – “Rise”
    Black Flag – “TV Party”
    Circle Jerks - Coup d'État
    Dead Milkmen – “Bitchin’ Camaro”
    Ministry – “stigmata”
The Smiths – “Death Of A Disco Dancer”
The Cure – “Jumping Someone Else’s Train”
The Church – “Under The Milky Way”
Screaming Trees – “I See Stars”
    Love And Rockets – “Alive”
    Smashing Pumpkins - “Siva”

  • 1st cassette tape purchased: Huey Lewis & The News – “Sports” / U2 – “Boy”

  • 1st concert attended: Big concert? Rose Bowl. Motörhead, Metallica, Guns & Roses (epic radicalness). I got there in a purple speckled paint 68 Mercury Cougar. No shit. We were listening to Anthrax, Megadeth, and Ride The Lightning on the way. It was Jeff Chisolm’s car. He ended up running away from home and joining a cult in the desert. Neither I nor his parents ever heard from him again.

  • 1st concert attended in Austin (if different from above): I think the only big concert I have attended in Austin is THE BOSS – WITH ADI. I did see Dylan at The Backyard though.

  • 1st CD purchased: The CureStaring At The Sea

  • 1st album downloaded: NapsterLed Zep Live

  • 1st personal music project: Two man band with my brother – Unfortunate Midsection

  • 1st recording: Unfortunate Midsection recorded a song called “Queso Flameado” that rodgered the earhole of a generation.

  • 1st live performance (if applicable): “The Humpty Dance” (Digital Underground) – karaoke – Lafayette, Louisiana – killed it.

  • 1st "something" I didn't ask you about: Christin Sjomeling. Her skin was cinnamon.
