From The Mind Of Adi #44: Shane Lawlor’s (Electric Touch) Firsts

Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.

Today: Shane Lawlor’s Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired Shane Lawlor from Electric Touch. Catch Electric Touch’s blistering rock ditties tonight at Emo’s.

  • 1st favorite song: According to my mother and father - "Brown Girl In The Ring" By Boney M. Apparently as soon as I could walk (which was at 9 months!), I was laughing and bouncing to this old classic.

  • 1st favorite musician or band: Buddy Holly. I would listen to Buddy Holly every night as a kid in England and drift off to sleep.

  • 1st vinyl purchased: Let's Dance by David Bowie. I got it for my mum (My Dad actually bought it but I signed the gift, like you do when you're a kid and your only job is playing in the yard) but before too long I had it in my room and it stayed there!

  • 1st album recorded on a cassette tape: I remember taping Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" off Gem AM - Solid Gold Radio (An Oldies, but Goodies Station in Nottingham). It wasn't piracy back then, it was just a deep rooted need to hear the song repeatedly and it wasn't in the shops at that time.

  • 1st cassette tape purchased: The Best of Buddy Holly. I wore that tape out!!! I still listen to him a lot.

  • 1st concert attended: Five Star - England's answer to The Jackson 5. I remember being amazing by the fact that 2 women were literally coming to blows over which one was waved at by one of the singers. At a young age I witnessed first hand the power of music, or the power being on a stage....or maybe just the power of being in Five Star - I'm not sure.

  • 1st CD purchased: Chuck Berry - Rock ‘n’ Roll Rarities. Another one that totally changed my life. My parents were shocked that I wanted to buy that old music, but I wanted nothing else.

  • 1st album downloaded: Believe it or not - Electric Touch by Electric Touch. Up to that point I only bought the CD or Vinyl so I could have the whole package, cover, read the liner notes etc.

  • 1st personal band: We were called Ease, and we were a 4-piece of school friends. We rehearsed every day and were really tight, but only played a handful of shows. We had tunes like "Lipstick Lover" and sounded a lot like The Jam.

  • 1st recording: My first ever band saved up and booked 24 hours in a local studio. It was a "lock out" so the band has the use of the studio for one day - from 9am - 9am the next day. We recorded 3 songs and when we listened back at home we thought that was it - We were stars. I don't know where the tape is now, but I heard it a few years ago and it's not as bad as you might think. The first Electric Touch recording was a 2 song demo recorded in Austin that ended up landing us a record deal!

  • 1st live performance: The Duchess Theatre in Nottingham. My friends booked the theatre (as we were too young to play in pubs), and we sold it out with 4 bands from school on the bill. My band was the second on. We didn't have a bass player, but we went down great! I remember after the show, I kissed a girl from school behind some stage scenery, who normally wouldn't look twice at me, and that was it - I knew what I wanted to be!

  • 1st national (or international) tour: Our first "Electric Touch" National Tour was with The Fratellis and The Airborne Toxic Event. It was an amazing experience we had a wonderful time! We're still close with The Airborne Toxic Event - they are friends and wonderful people, so it's great to see them doing so well.
