From The Mind Of Adi #46: Jaylinn Davidson’s Firsts

Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.

Today: Jaylinn Davidson’s Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired Jaylinn Davidson from The Boxing Lesson. Get a dose of the band’s blistering space-rock at Emo’s on July 30th.

  • 1st favorite song: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - “American Girl.”

  • 1st favorite musician or band: My sisters are 9 & 10 years older than me, so I got an early taste of some good and bad music. I remember the life-size poster of Peter Frampton hanging in my sister's room in Henrietta, TX, and going to sleep to it glowing under the black light. Although Frampton Comes Alive! played quite a role in my youth, it's definitely Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers that did it for me.

  • 1st vinyl purchased: INXS - Shabooh Shoobah.

  • 1st album recorded on a cassette tape: N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton. This is the first tape that I "dubbed" from the original. I guess I didn't have the fancy stereo unit with a turntable AND cassette recorder in there as well.

  • 1st cassette tape purchased: I can't remember the first tape that I purchased, but I remember the tape that stayed in my car tape player so long that it eventually ate itself: That tape was The Smashing Pumpkins, GISH. Literally, I bought the tape, popped it in my Beretta GTU (hahahahahah).

  • 1st concert attended: The very first concert I attended was Ronnie Milsap, Tanya Tucker and Glenn Campbell in Wichita Falls, TX. It was at an auditorium and I went with my sisters. I was SO excited! I was 5. The first concert that I waited all night in line outside of the Astrodome in Houston for (drinking grape Mad Dog 20/20) was Guns N’ Roses and Metallica. Faith No More opened that show and IT WAS AWESOME!

  • 1st CD purchased: Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream.

  • 1st album downloaded: Tortoise - TNT

  • 1st personal band: The Boxing Lesson.

  • 1st recording: Songs in the Key of C... wow. What an experience THAT was. I would like to take this time to thank Trudy's (north, south and campus) for the Tri-Fecta of Mexican Martinis (or Gin Sunrises) that they supplied to us before each and every session. Wow. You wonder why that album sounds wild and crazy? Because that's how we recorded it! Shitfaced at the Music Lab.

  • 1st national (or international) tour: Songs in the Key of C tour with Paul (Waclawsky) & Jake (Mitchell) (and Tina! (Dolney Mitchell)) in the fall of 2006. We went out to the West Coast and had a BLAST! I got to play on stages that I had seen my favorite bands play on. Awesome.

  • 1st "something" I didn't ask you about: The first time that I realized that the world was bigger than my immediate surroundings was on a road trip to Grove, OK with my mom and dad. We were listening to some jazz (dad LOVED it, and turned me onto it very early..... As a kid he would take me to clubs to see the best musicians) and I looked out the window to see a little girl in the car next to us on the freeway looking out the window just like me. It all kind of hit me then (maybe it was the good jazz) that this little girl was with her family, probably going to her grandparent's place, and she had her own room, and her own friends, and her own life..... And it had nothing to do with me or mine. It was a big day for a little girl's brain.
