FROM THE MIND OF ADI (#4) - Firsts, Vol. 1

Firsts:  Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.

Today:  Adi’s firsts!

1st favorite song:  “Uptown Girl” by Billy Joel.

Yes, it was probably Christie Brinkley who did it."

1st favorite musician or bandU2The Joshua Tree was the first full album I needed to have.  The days of only mix tapes in my collection were over (of course, Bono's a little "off" now...).

1st album recorded on a cassette tape:  Again, U2's The Joshua Tree.  Hours and hours of enjoyment, reading Enid Blyton, with the landmark album as my soundtrack to all the stories.

1st cassette tape purchased: Blue Sky Mining by Midnight Oil.  Everyone knows “Beds Are Burning” from Diesel and Dust but Blue Sky Mining dug up some Midnight Oil classics like “One Country,” “Blue Sky Mine,” and yes, “River Runs Red.”  These will never be forgotten years.

1st concert attendedHuman Rights Now! in New Delhi in September 1988 - Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Tracy Chapman, and Youssou N'dour.  I paid something in the range of $1 and $2 to see this massive concert (yes, middle school discount, currency conversion, and all that).  We had an exam in school the next morning - it was canceled - and I saw our school principal’s wife at the show.  Sting was joined by some of his peers for “Every Breath You Take” and Bruce Springsteen pulled an Indian lass from the audience during “Dancing In The Dark.” She was no Courtney Cox, readers.

1st CD purchasedFacelift by Alice in Chains.  I already had Nevermind on tape but my “Man In The Box” featured a “sound” I had never heard before and inspired me to purchase this as my first ever CD.  Ten was probably next.

1st in-store concert attended in AustinRetarded Elf at Tower Records.  Suffice it to say, I was easily impressed during my early days in Austin.

1st beer drank in Austin: At the Starfish in-store at Sound Exchange record store (R.I.P.). Or was it Sixteen Deluxe?

1st concert attended in Austin:  “Sunday Night Rock ‘n’ Roll Free For All” at The Hole In The Wall. Paul Minor is a legend.

1st concert tickets won off the radioOzzy Osbourne, Sepultura, and Type O Negative at Southpark Meadows courtesy of 101X.  I still remember by friend running down to my room in the dorms screaming “you’re on the radio.”  Yes, as soon as “Crazy Train” kicked off on the radio, I was ready to call in and it was my lucky day.

Oh yeah.  It's like this.  “Feels Like The First Time” – Foreigner (Live At Deer Creek - 1993)

Oh, and it's also like this.  “Like A Virgin” by Madonna.  A personal favorite.
