Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.
Today: Bryan Keplesky’s Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired Bryan Keplesky, an amazing artist, and beloved local rag Misprint Magazine’s editor. Head down to Shangri-La on Saturday for the zine’s latest shindig, the Misprint Summer Jortacular!. The event kicks off at nice ‘n’ early at 4 p.m. (You can check out the sweet flyer after the jump.)
1st favorite song: Probably the seldom-heard Elton John ode to girls and Crocodylidae called "Crocodile Rock". I was 5. I remember my dad playing it in our living room and it would be one big dance party with me jumping up and down, singing the "nahhhhh, na na na nuh nahhhhhh" part really loudly. The first girl I ever had a really big crush on was named Suzy, too. I still hate her.
1st favorite musician or band: Musician: Michael Jackson. Thriller was the first cassette I ever owned. Fun fact! His birthday is the day after mine. (RIP)
Band: The Beach Boys. I used to do interpretive dance skits to songs like "409" and “Surfin’ Safari” when I was in early elementary school. Thinking about all this stuff makes me realize how much I used to like bands (tie).
1st album recorded on a cassette tape: Already mentioned Thriller, but the first cassette anyone ever gave me was a copy of NWA's Straight Outta Compton when I was in 6th grade. We were on a school field trip to Washington DC, and this friend of mine gave me his cassette. He had scratched off every single word on the A and B sides so his mom wouldn't know what it was. I had never heard of them before, and I put the tape in and shit my jorts. I started swearing a lot more after listening to it.
1st cassette tape purchased: No idea, but I do remember buying cassettes of PM Dawn's The Bliss Album...? and Duran Duran's The Wedding Album at the same time. Someone should do a mash-up of that. What’s Car Stereo guy up to?
1st concert attended: People always give me shit about this, but it was Kenny G., and it was here in Austin. I was in second or third grade and I fucking loved Kenny G. "Songbird" totally rules. That’s in present tense, chubies. My teacher was a good family friend, and her husband was a session jazz drummer. He got hooked up with the tickets but couldn't go. I got back a spelling test one day (100% score) and my teacher wrote a note on it saying that she was taking me to see Kenny G. She picked me up in her old-school yellow VW Beetle. That was still one of the best shows I've ever been too. Hear that Trail of Dudes? Wind chimes.
1st CD purchased: Vs by Pearl Jam. I had my grunge phase, just like every kid in the 90's did. I was disappointed the first time I went to eat at Eddie V's because I wore my ripped jeans, flannel shirt and wrote "Pro Choice" on my arm in Sharpie. I felt like an asshole.
1st album downloaded: I sort of missed out on the whole Napster thing because I had a shitty Richmond Virginia dial-up.
1st art design by you: The first gigposter I ever did was back in 2001 for a band called Carbon Leaf, who were quite popular with Richmond bros. The singer was always pretty cool with me.
1st zine you started: The only zine I've ever done is Misprint. I always wrote and made comics when I was a kid, but they were all one-offs and even worse than Misprint.
1st unbelievable idea you had: When I was 4 or 5 I made my parents call me "Robin Hood", I guess because I thought Errol Flynn's Robin Hood was awesome, and therefore would make me awesome. I still hate Kevin Costner to this day.
1st "something" I didn't ask you about: My friend Jason bought me my first Lonestar, when I moved back here in the summer of 2004. It was at the Parish. I think it was $7.50!
