From The Mind Of Adi #58: Roy Dank’s Firsts

Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.

Today: Roy Dank’s Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired Roy Dank, a.k.a. My Cousin Roy. Founder of The Wurst Music Co., My Cousin Roy will be spinning at Barcelona tonight to kick-off Learning Secrets’ new residency at the club; RSVP via email for $3 entry.

  • 1st favorite song: Men At Work: “Who Can It Be Now?”

  • 1st favorite musician or band: Men At Work.

  • 1st vinyl purchased: Men At Work: Business As Usual. I liked Men At Work so much that I convinced my two good friends at the time to start pooling our spare change each week so we could start a band and ostensibly be as amazing as we thought Men At Work were at the time. Mind you, I was 5 years old at the time.

  • 1st album recorded on a cassette tape: First I can remember is Pavement's Westing (By Musket and Sextant) LP on Drag City.

  • 1st cassette tape purchased: Run-D.M.C.: Run-D.M.C.

  • 1st concert attended: I grew up as a Marine Corps brat and lived in Japan when I was a teenager, so didn't start going to concerts until right before college. First concert I can recall was Fugazi and The Spinanes, who oddly enough played my college a few weeks after I started.

  • 1st CD purchased: Not a memory I can recall.

  • 1st album downloaded: People download albums?

  • 1st personal music project: I plead the Fifth (Amendment).

  • 1st label founded: See last answer.

  • 1st recording as producer: See the one before last.

  • 1st national (or international) tour: Did a European tour in 2003, played London, Berlin, Vienna, Zurich and Budapest.

  • 1st "something" I didn't ask you about: 1st gig in Austin: Learning Secrets this Thursday!
