From The Mind Of Adi #65: Jonathan Meiburg’s Firsts

Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.

2009 Fun Fun Fun Fest Edition!

Today: Jonathan Meiburg’s Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired Shearwater’s Jonathan Meiburg. Meiburg’s powerful voice and brilliant lyrics are mainstays of Shearwater’s exquisitely arranged compositions, and in concert, his intense vocal delivery will undoubtedly command your undivided attention. Don’t miss them at this year’s Fun Fun Fun Fest -- Shearwater performs at 7:30 p.m. on the Yellow Stage on Saturday, November 7th.

  • 1st favorite song: "Bein’ Green" (Kermit the Frog / Sesame Street). Also really liked "Fanfare for the Common Man" (Aaron Copland) .

  • 1st favorite musician or band: Dire Straits.

  • 1st vinyl purchased: Pink Floyd - Animals.

  • 1st album recorded on a cassette tape: Simon and Garfunkel - Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M..

  • 1st cassette tape purchased: Led Zeppelin IV, I think.

  • 1st concert attended: James Taylor, alas. I woulda been like 13 or 14, so...1989 perhaps.

  • 1st recording: Singing backup (as part of a chorus) on R&B singer Jacob Lundy's demo tape in Cary, NC. I was amazed by reverb. 13 or 14 yrs old.

  • 1st live performance: Theater Gallery in Dallas, TX with high school band (I played lead guitar). Playing mostly Pink Floyd covers.

  • 1st national (or international) tour: Sometime in 1999 I think. Drove to Bloomington, IN to play one show and drove straight back (21 hours each way).

  • 1st "something" I didn't ask you about: 1st intimations of mortality: Almost fell off a boat, Falklands 1997. Almost fell off a cliff a few days later.
