From The Mind Of Adi #76: Erin Mikulenka’s Firsts

Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.

Today: Erin Mikulenka’s Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired fashion designer extraordinaire Erin Mikulenka. Erin and Jen Rea, a.k.a. Team Fabrication, present the latest installment of Fabrication 7 this Saturday night at The Mohawk. The lovely Team Fab ladies have invited me to host the event so you’ll get to enjoy my cordial banter but much, much more importantly, you can check out their wonderful new collection.

  • 1st favorite song: “Legs” - ZZ Top. I wanted to be those girls in the video TCBing at the shoe store! Actually I think the video made me like the song more.

  • 1st favorite musician or band: Female: Cyndi Lauper. GAWD I thought I was so cool dressed as her for Halloween! Male: My daddy.

  • 1st vinyl purchased: Pre Allowance Days: Thriller by Michael Jackson was always around and I was enamored with it. Post Allowance Days: Croaker by Chris Knox, my New Zealand Husband.

  • 1st album recorded on a cassette tape: Eazy-Duz-It by Eazy E, a hand me down from my older brother. Black Nasty's song, "Eazy", a bit of a homage to the late Eazy ...it makes perfect sense.

  • 1st cassette tape purchased: True Blue - Madonna.

  • 1st concert attended: Miami Sound Machine at Aquafest. Anyone remember that shit? I can recall precisely that Gloria Estefan was wearing-black spandex jumpsuit and a calf length metallic blue overcoat with shoulder pads of course!!

  • 1st CD purchased: I think I got 12 for a penny the from the Columbia House catalog. Yeah!!! I can almost guarantee Boyz II Men’s Cooleyhighharmony was one of the 12.

  • 1st album downloaded: Are You Sleepy by The Gerbils ...from this amazing site I can't remember...it has since shut down. I geeked out on it every day...perhaps all that fun free music gave my computer a virus ..it was like 3 computers ago yo.

  • 1st fashion show: UT Student Fashion Show at the Frank Erwin Center, sometime between 1995-1999 when you could buy a sports package and attend every single UT home football game for a mere $60. Hook ‘em muthafuck!

  • 1st "something" I didn't ask you about: First MAJOR musical regret: Seeing Luna at La Zona Rosa when my brother told me to go to see Elf Power and Neutral Milk Hotel at the Electric Lounge down the street on the exact same night. I acted like WTF?!?! It’s Luna!!!! Clueless young lady I was at the time. I'll prolly never get to see Jeff Mangum play live. He's my American husband, BTW smile
