Curated by The Reverberation Appreciation Society and The Black Angels, the annual Austin Psych Fest has blossomed into an amazing showcase of all things psychedelic. The 2011 installment took place this weekend at the Seaholm Power Plant, the festival’s fourth home in as many years. And as always, the organizers combed through the long annals of psychedelic music around the world to deliver a lineup that covered pretty much every little niche of the genre’s family tree.

Initial Friday’s highlights included Radio Moscow’s scorching six-strings and Atlas Sound’s muted musings but those were just a prelude to two of my favorites. The Crystal Stilts and A Place To Bury Strangers were both in top form; the former furnished a hazy psych-pop soundscape on the main stage before a distorted, feedback drenched aural assault by the latter A Place To Bury Strangers blew away all in attendance.

On Saturday, Prefuse 73’s electro-experimentation and Black Moth Super Rainbow’s intriguing concoctions preceded the legendary Peter Kember a.k.a. Sonic Boom a.k.a. Spectrum, who set sail on a droning voyage through exotic seas, taking all in the audience with him to his mysterious destinations. It was quite the trip and thoroughly enjoyed by a fervent group of loyal fans, including myself.
