From The Mind of Adi: Nancy Whang’s Firsts

Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.

Today: Nancy Whang’s Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired Nancy Whang, keyboardist for LCD Soundsystem and vocalist for The Juan MacLean through the years. Whang will be in town this Friday, performing at The Mohawk as a part of The Juan MacLean’s live show.

  • 1st favorite song: The Animals - “House Of The Rising Sun”

  • 1st favorite musician or band: Duran Duran -- made more thrilling by the fact that I have two brothers named Simon and John

  • 1st album recorded on a cassette tape: Side One: Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon / Side Two: Bob Marley And The Wailers - Legend

  • 1st cassette tape purchased: The Animals - Animalization

  • 1st concert attended: Nu Shooz, Beaverton Mall Parking Lot, 1985?

  • 1st CD purchased / 1st album downloaded: my 1st CD or 1st downloaded album is about as memorable as the first time I ever bought bottled water.

  • 1st personal music project: TBA

  • 1st recording: Campaign speech for my bid for student body president, 8th grade, in which I made a tape to tape edit of cut up bits of Deee-Lite’s World Clique. I didn't win.

  • 1st live performance: Ballet recital, age 6.

  • 1st "something" I didn't ask you about: First festival: Lollapalooza 1994. I met Nick Cave. He was very nice. It was also the last festival I ever attended as a civilian.
