Who else is stoked for FunFunFun Fest? I’ve seen the lineup – and you haven’t. HA! But get stoked. Seriously. Lineup drops this week – keep checking TransmissionEntertainment.com and be the first to know. In the meantime, here are your Monday Transmissions for the week of August 18, 2008.
- James Taylor
Monday: Rest up – you’ll need it. This week's a doozy. Or stop by Plush (7th and Red River) where I work the door and occasionally step behind the bar. Come say “Howdy.”
Tuesday: Prosthetic Records’ Infernaeon bring their blast beats and black t-shirts to Red 7. I prefer my “Black Metal” to be in the vein of Fishbone and Living Color. Dimmu Borgir and King Diamond? Not so much. But hey – if that’s your thing, Red 7 is your spot Tuesday. Manifestation, Self Induced Pain, and Disfigured support with three of the most metal sounding bandnames imaginable.

The Mohawk more your scene? James Jackson of Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice headlines with lo-fi Seattleites The Duchess and the Duke supporting. Wooden Wand is part of this whole “New Weird America,” (a play on Greil Marcus’ novel Old Weird America about Dylan’s infamous “Basement Tapes”) 1960s psychedelic folk revival thing going on. Total art college stuff but James Jackson’s solo stuff is a bit more accessible. Think gospel-tinged country and folk with a Jagger-esque voice.

Looking for something new? Alexander Speed is relatively fresh on the scene but hardly rough around the edges – kind of a lo-fi My Morning Jacket (who's playing Stubb's soon).
Wednesday: Gotta say I’m a huge fan of The Cool Kids (check out Gorilla vs. Bear for an exclusive new track, “Pennies.”) The Chicago-natives are in town Wednesday and I’ll be there for sure. DJ Mel opens for the Kids outside, with snobby party kids Millionaires and Hypercrush rocking rich white children inside at Emo’s.
Xiu Xiu’s latest release Women As Lovers seems to be destined for a spot on most writers end-of-year Best Of lists. The Kill Rock Stars three piece will be at Mohawk Wednesday with Carla Bozulich (crazy stuff) supporting. My favorite thing about Mohawk as of late is the after-parties they throw inside following bigger shows on the patio. Wednesday is no different, with Death is Not a Joyride playing inside afterwards.

Beauty Bar hosts The Ugly Beats, Petals and Hacienda. How can you not like Petals – c’mon! That’s good stuff right there. But good luck dodging the punk mayhem in front of Red 7 on your way to the Booty, I mean, Beauty Bar. Everyone’s favorite punk bar is home to 13th Victim, Whiskey Rebels, Pressure Point, and Combat Shock Wednesday.
The Tunnels keep 1968 alive at Club De Ville supporting Pscyhotropic with DJs Scorpio and Whiplash.
Thursday: Ever find yourself wondering who the hippest bands in the Austin are today, the bands you’re supposed to like, whether you really do or not? Stop by Mohawk Thursday – you got Brazos, White Denim, Zookeeper and Peel. Kind of the hippest of the hip right there. Equally buzzworthy, Dirty Hearts hit Beauty Bar before embarking on a West Coast tour for most of September. Piano-rock trio AJ Vincent and The Turkish Delight support.
Friday: If you haven’t seen Behold… the Arctopus, get your ass to Red 7 Friday. Avant-garde metal 3-piece from Brooklyn – Colin Marston (also of Dysrhythmia) plays a Warr guitar (yeah, just Google it) – just all around amazing musicians. Even if you don’t really like metal this is one of those shows you just go see for the novelty of it. Intronaut headlines (Century Media prog-metal) with Mouth of the Architect and Lions of Tsavo (how many times can one say “underappreciated”) also playing.
Attack Formation and Eagle Claw are at Beauty Bar Friday while The Laughing celebrates the release of their new CD at Club De Ville. Judging from the tracks the band put on their Myspace, this new The Laughing stuff should be pretty hot. Not like the scene isn’t flooded with danceable indie-rock these days, but screw it, I always have fun at a Laughing show.

Saturday: Mohawk hosts Monroe Mustang – super chillaxed indie rock, nothing to get a hard-on over. Bombazine Black support. That’s a band I’m excited to see. Sitting at Clementine Coffee Bar with a storm rolling in, recovering from last night’s debauchery, Bombazine Black’s orchestral songwriting is perfect right now. File under "rainy day music."
Sunday: Red 7 continues their Free Summer Sundays series with ex-Riddlin Kids Say Hello To The Angels and my homeys Seaflea. Outside of the Transmission community, you’ve got options, the aforementioned My Morning Jacket show at Stubb's or hip hop at Emo’s - Nas, Talib Kweli, Jay Electronica, and DJ Green Lantern. Nas just added a second, early show at 6:00, followed by the previously schedule 9:00 show.
