MONDAY TRANSMISSIONS (#4)

Long weekend – no desire to write a cheesy opening paragraph.  On with the show, as they say. Here are your MONDAY TRANSMISSIONS for the week of August 25, 2008.

Monday:  The Mohawk recently started “Metal Mondays” – come hang and bang your head.  Or hit up Red 7 for some punky pop music with NorTexans Kid Liberty and A Bird A Sparrow. Chicago’s A Kidnap in Color round out this matinee lineup.  Bring your little sister, or underage girlfriend, if you’ve got one. [No advance tickets available]

Bummed about being back at school?  Drink away your sorrows students, drink ‘em all away, at Beauty Bar Monday. The “Back To School, Alright!” Party features two stages of music – definitely not the most dancey lineup you’ll see at Beauty Bar but fun nonetheless.  Inside you’ve got Peel, White White Lights and Sad Accordians, while the patio hosts Belaire, AM Syndicate, and Future Clouds and Radar.  Come early for free pizza and vodka from sponsors Hoboken Pie (best pizza downtown, definitely) and 42 Below[No advance tickets available]

Tuesday: Pompeii has a new record coming out in October.  Nothing Happens for a Reason is the band's second release with Eyeball Records.  I’m stoked – such a good band, on record as well as live. Catch them Tuesday at The Mohawk with Gazelles and Wine & Revolution.  Personally, I’m interested to see these Wine & Revolution kids – the name keeps popping up on some great bills but I’ve yet to see them in person.  Garagey Brit-pop from circa ’63 – can’t go wrong with that. [No advance tickets available]

Wednesday: Bail out of work early and catch Love as Laughter’s in-store performance at Waterloo Records this Wednesday.  Follow it up with a second showing at The Mohawk later that evening with Oxford Collapse.  Overall, a night of toe-tapping pop music is in store from these two Brooklyn-based bands.  Think Modest Mouse, TV On the Radio, etc.  Sticking with the early show-late show formula that seems to be working so well for The Mohawk, Oxford Collapse is followed by Benko and Loudest Boom Bah Yea inside.  Benko celebrates their CD release, and the minimalist trio of bass, drums and vibraphone appeals on novelty alone (as does Loudest Boom Bah Yea’s two-piece lineup of drums and… well, drums), so why not just stay put and drink up all Mohawk's PBR?  Sounds like an easy plan to me.  [Advance tickets & show info available here]

Thursday:  Alt-country fans, Thursday is your night, alright.  The Mohawk hosts Li’l Cap’n Travis, Frank Smith and Silver Pines.  Frank Smith (a band, not a man) is quickly developing buzzband status following some attention-grabbing performances this past SXSW.  And since this seems to be the only decent thing going on Thursday night, why wouldn’t you be at The Mohawk?  Bring your boots and blue jeans.  [Advance tickets & show info available here]

Friday:  Synthesizers, four-on-the-floor beats, androgynous boys n' girls bumping and grinding like it’s 1995.  Hollywoodian pseudo-glam electro-pop hipsters Ultraviolet Sound and Electric Valentine join Prince Klassen Friday at Beauty Bar. [No advance tickets available]

Rock-A-Round Entertainment's first annual Wild Weekend Power Pop Festival opens Friday. Mohawk hosts reunions from 80s bands like Paul Collins’ Beat, Pointed Sticks and Nikki Corvette along with locals The Ugly BeatsBlack & Whites and Electric Shadows round out this bill.  Those are some legendary bands – I mean if you ever wondered where bands like Weezer got their formula for powerpop success, it was this scene. [Advance tickets & show info available here]

Looking for a cheaper thrill?  Red 7 hosts Zennith Fuzzbomb, Last Crush, and The Steed. [No advance tickets available]

Saturday:  Day two of the Wild Weekend Power Pop Festival includes more reunions (first wave punks The Boys playing their first US show in 25 years and 20/20).  Boss Martians, Tranzmitors, Cute Lepers, Gentleman Jesse and His Men and Baby Shakes round out the lineup. [Advance tickets & show info available here]

Candy & Cigarettes (“A quarterly journal containing essayz and commix and short fiction and stuff”) celebrates the release of their second issue at Club De Ville with DJs Lady Pterodactyl and Learning Secrets and indie-rockers A Faulty Chromosome & International Waters.  I say start your night here, then hit up Beauty Bar for the return of Car Stereo (Wars).  Dance your ass off.  Missed The Laughing’s CD release show last week (I did)? The boys play again Saturday with Car Stereo (Wars).  [No advance tickets available]

I Wrestled A Bear Once play Red 7 Saturday. Srsly – great band name.  Great band too.  Imagine a sonic mixture of Portishead and Dillinger Escape Plan. The Cabaret and Fire From The Gods support on this matinee bill.  Later that same night you’ve got Grindcore kings Phobia, Impaled, and a host of other absurdly grotesque grindcore and death metal acts.  [No advance tickets available]

Sunday: Really not much going on Sunday, except for Jeremy Enigk (Sunny Day Real Estate, The Fire Theft) at Stubb’s.  I’ll be there.

Till next week...
