MONDAY TRANSMISSIONS (#5)

Monday:  This Monday at Plush we’ve got a good one – Bridge Farmers (if Kurt Cobain had grown up in Texas, he’d be in this band), The Bread, and The Van Buren Boys (think Defiance, Ohio or This Bike is a Pipe Bomb).  Shows are always 21 and up and always free.

Tuesday:  Mohawk is promulgating Big Lebowski Tuesday with $3 Caucasians and Happy Hour prices all night. The Dude abides.

If you absolutely have to see live music Tuesday, I suggest Lymbyc Systym and This Will Destroy You at Emo’s.

Wednesday:  I checked out The Donkeys on Myspace whilst sipping my coffee Saturday morning – their twangy indie rock (akin to The Pixies chillin' in Marfa, TX) made me wish I was driving a truck through West Texas. Catch them at the Mohawk on Wednesday with Golden Bear and one of my favorite local bands Visitors.

Sea Legs at Beauty Bar?  Highly recommended.  Sea Legs have a big sound, reminiscent of British bands like Elbow or even Coldplay, with a distinctly Southern touch, and I wouldn’t be surprised if, in 6 months ,(following the release of their new album in October), you heard this band everywhere and had to pay a much higher cover to see them live.

That’s the Transmission Community’s lineup for Wednesday.  Outside that, you’ve got a show that I'm way stoked about – Wu-Tang Clan’s GZA performing Liquid Swords (arguably one of the top 10 hip-hop records of all time, a near-perfect classic released at the tailend of hip-hop's Golden Era) in its entirety. You kidding me? How could you miss that?!

Thursday:  Mohawk hosts Shearwater on Thursday, with Wye Oak and Hospital Ships supporting. Lots of people seem real stoked on Shearwater and Matador Records certainly knows how to pick ‘em.

Beauty Bar hosts another Learning Secrets Death to False Disco party with Ian Orth and Jeramy Neugent DJing.  Also, check out Learning Secrets Podcast #4 here featuring new music from The Antlers, M83, Flying Lotus and a lot more.

Friday: Heard Bankrupt and the Borrowers yet?  Get with it – one of the best bands in Austin, grungy blues in the vein of Tom Waits and The Black Keys.  Okay, okay...I play drums in the Borrowers, I’ll admit it.  But, hey, I'm being objective here; it's a good band.  Friday we open for White Ghost Shivers outside at Mohawk.  The Noise Revival Orchestra round out the bill.

You may have read about The Boxing Lesson in last weeks Austin Chronicle.  Drummer Jake Mitchell is scheduled to turn himself in to authorities Wednesday, facing charges of “conspiracy to manufacture marijuana” dating back to October of 2006.  He's also being charged as a "narco-terrorist" under the Patrio Act.  Nice, eh?  You can read more about the situation here.  The band has vowed to continue on without Mitchell, thus I assume they are still playing as scheduled at Beauty Bar on Friday with The Calm Blue Sea

Speaking of drugs, you may enjoy The Golden Boys, Manikin, The Teeners and Safe Sex at Red 7.  Psychadelic garage punk all night.  Get sweaty.

Saturday:  Listening to “Yours Mine Ours” on The Lemurs’ Myspace, I think I get what all the hype is about.  If this track is any indication, the band’s new record should be pretty amazing.  The Lemurs celebrate the release of Million Little Bits Saturday at Mohawk with Low Line Caller, Belaire, and Pink Nasty supporting.  According to a blog on the band’s Myspace, all the bands playing Saturday night contributed in some way, shape, or form to the recording of The Lemurs’ new record and will join The Lemurs onstage to perform their parts.  Need more incentive to go? Every ticket purchased receives a free CD.  This is where you need to be Saturday night, no questions asked.

Unless, of course, you’re a dance-loving party kid.  In that case, it’s Beauty Bar for Milk 6 with DJs Abominatron, King Louie and Orion. Many Birthdays (lo-fi synth-rock post-punk) celebrates the release of their new EP Emptiness is Forever same night, same place.

See you next week.
