I recently sat down for a cup of chai tea w/soy, with the talented Aaron Pillar of "The Appleseed Cast". We discussed emo, Sagamartha and what a beautiful home he has! His pet ball python took quite a liking to me...xoxo...and his collection of miniature spoons was impressive. Ok, so I'm full of shit and if any of you hipsters know enough about the present and future of indie music, it's all about the internets, baby. But these guys were kicking it before the MySpace and the Facebook. Their music rocks, and if you have any plans other than Mohawk on Saturday night, cancel them. BTW-You can tell a great deal about someone through the amount of ellipses they use...
(In addition to the ellipsis, also take note on the lack of quotes in most of Pillar's typed words. He's very straight to the point and wastes no time with the petty use of proper punctuation.)
Stacie: You guys were putting out albums before "emo" was an everyday term. How would you define emo when you were just getting into the music scene?
Aaron: It was certainly different I guess, for me the reason I started playing in this "scene" was access. I saw house shows and bad equipment but people having a good time, and you didn't have to be an amazing player either..I guess it was easy to love it, easy to be a part of...
Stacie: How would you define emo in today's environment? (bonus points for
including the words "eyeliner" and "girl pants")
Aaron: Tight pants are ok if you can pull it off, but eyeliner is lame...Emo is a selling point plain and simple...its money always about the money..
Stacie: If you were to die tomorrow (sorry if I jinx you in any way), and you could only be remembered for one song, what would it be? (and why?)
Aaron: Tough question...I cant really say...Steps and Numbers maybe...
Stacie: What's the most played album in your iPod right now?
Aaron: I dont have one but on my girls I usually play Neon Bible all the time or Depeche Mode..Music for the Masses..
Stacie: Now that the more lyrically-driven band "Old Canes" has been formed, will we be seeing more instrumentals from The Appleseed Cast in the future?
Aaron: I dont think so...I think more lyrics and singing...
Stacie: If you had to describe your new album Sagarmatha in two words, what would they be?
Aaron: Tough. Choices...
Stacie: What is the song writing process like for the band? I can't find one particular writer linked to any one song, so I'm assuming it's a multi-person collaboration…sitting in a room together with pens and papers?
Aaron: We usually jam together as a band to something Chris or I wrote, a simple riff of chord progression...Lyrics are sitting in front of a computer or singing in the car...
Stacie: I have "The Fight Song" in my all time BEST breakup song list. Was any band member in particular getting their heart trampled on at the time?
Aaron: That would be Chris I believe...its more of a being done with all of that garbage finally and moving on...
Stacie: On your MySpace page you've listed the "Sounds Like" section as "Caffeine cigarettes and lots of delay pedals...." I noticed there is no comma between caffeine and cigarettes, is that a new thing- "caffeine cigarettes"?
Aaron: thats just my horrible grammar...Did I mention Im terrible at it and your going to have to spell check this entire interview..
Stacie: You've also listed "mexican food" as an influence. What dish inspires you the most? Burritos? Tacos? Flan?.... And on that note, is there any place in Austin, TX that you guys have had some stellar Tex Mex?
Aaron: I usually do BBQ in Austin or that sushi place on 6th by emos..Mexican food is San Diego...its heavenly...
Stacie: What can someone expect at a live show (other than hearing some of the most awesome songs ever!, played live)?
Aaron: Bring ear plugs..were loud...
Austinites can checkout The Appleseed Cast this Saturday, February 7th at Mohawk with True Widow and Calm Blue Sea (outside, starting @ 9:00pm).
