Hey sports fans, Mojo here with another snappy preview for what’s coming up this week with Transmission! If you’ve got a thing for stripped-down rock and roll
and accessible tunes (and let’s be honest—who doesn’t?), then you should be looking
forward to this Friday, September 16 at Red 7 because Transmission Entertainment is bringing you Obits, some of
Sub Pop’s finest. If you read what most journalists have to say about the band, you’ll
probably get sick of hearing the phrase “indie rock veterans” pretty quickly. Sure, these
guys have been around the block a time or two, but I feel like every time “veterans” gets
thrown into the descriptives, we’re left with a sort of used up, Keith Richards-esque imagery that, despite its heroic connotations, clashes with the freshness of Obits’ sound.
At the same time, I will say that Rick Froberg (guitar, vocals) certainly has something of
a Lou Reed swagger about him that will definitely resonate with those of you longing for
that unadulterated, punk rock spirit. If you’re familiar with how things go at Red 7, then
I’m sure you’re realizing how kickass this sort of act will come across live.
Let Obits help you kick off your weekend right!
Obits just released their second full-length, Moody, Standard and Poor, at the end of March so you can be sure to catch some of its stellar grooves at Red 7. The albums kicks off with “You Gotta Lose,” a song I’ve steadily adopted as an anthem for this lingering Indian Summer we’re experiencing here in ATX, and if I had plans to rob a bank, you can bet your sweet ass this would be on the playlist (So what? You know you’ve made playlists for stranger things before). One of the other things I love about Obits is the variety of sound available on their records; it definitely doesn’t come at the expense of cohesiveness, but you can find something for just about any mood. If you generally find yourself liking versatile bands like Ween or Pavement that achieve a healthy variety of cadence, emotional content and tone while sticking to their guns, you’ll probably get into Obits pretty quickly. So far I’d have to say the track that sticks with me the most these days is “Pine On,” a song that exhibits Obits’ characteristic droning rawness and propinquity for surf-rock-inspired eerie melodies. You can check it out in the YouTube video below or get your “Tickets” now and strut on in to Red 7 Friday at 9pm and catch it live!
