Friends and lovers of soul music,
For the last ten years, Austin's WAXPLOITATION! DJs have encouraged
locals folks to shake it like nobody else's business and helped spread
the good word of vintage soul and funk music. All we have ever wanted
to do is share our record collections with friends over a few
Lonestars, remember legends like James Brown and shine light on those
who should of been like local James Polk. We've had a phenomenal time
over the years and packed venues beyond our wildest dreams thanks to
YOU.
Over the last year, all the members of the WAXPLOITATION! DJs started
receiving harassing emails, letters in the mail as well as phone calls
from the not-so-nice lawyers of the Los Angeles-based Waxploitation
label/artist management company telling us to "Cease and Desist" using
the name WAXPLOITATION! DJs, that we are in violation of copyright
infringement for using the name. That if we don't stop using the name,
we'll end up in a court battle, probably getting our pants sued off.
We're just a few guys, looking to have a good time and though we don't
quite understand how we pose any threat to the L.A.-based label in any
way, we're forced to act whether we like it or not. We have a theory
it's their lawyers trying to look busy and finding creative ways to
validate their retainer fees but regardless, we can't afford a court
battle in any form.
After a good ten year run as the WAXPLOITATION! DJs, we are being
forced by L.A.-based Waxploitation to change our name. We're still
working out the final detail of what this new name will be but we will
make the announcement at our next show Friday May 29th at Club de
Ville 900 Red River.
New name, same funky business.
We hope to see all of you there, if you want to talk about it or want
copies of the letters, please contact us, we're ready to talk. We're
just not going to be quiet about this.
