"Austin’s Shearwater spent some of 2008
playing a brief tour supporting Coldplay, which counts as yet another
notch in its ascent from shambling, atmospheric Okkervil River side
project to significant musical force. That rise to prominence was all
but guaranteed with last year’s justly praised Rook, a
hauntingly apocalyptic yet strangely hopeful record, full of elegiac
instrumentation and unusual tonal shifts that anchor singer Jonathan
Meiburg’s quavering voice in an atmosphere of creeping dread and quiet
introspection. That music this uncompromisingly reflective can break
wide certainly bodes well for fellow mellow cohorts Brazos and Black
Before Red, two Austin indie groups who are similarly on the verge."
