FUN FUN FUN FEST ANNOUNCES DATES FOR 2012 EVENT AT AUDITORIUM SHORES

AUSTIN, TX (December 8, 2011) – Fun Fun Fun Fest announced today that it will be hosting the 7th annual Fun Fun Fun Fest at Auditorium Shores on November 2, 3, and 4 in the fall of 2012. In 2011, the 3-day event was the largest in its six-year history, showing over 35% growth in attendance and over 700 total jobs created. Festival organizers reported that the event growth helped add $5.35 million in tourism dollars to the local economy.

In the 2011 move to Auditorium Shores, festival promoters were able to work with an increased footprint, larger capacity, and more central location – while maintaining the intimate feel of the festival. In this move, they also were successfully able to increase bike usage, decrease parking pressure on the neighborhood, improve line wait times, and improve sound attenuation by day.

“We are very excited to solidify our move to Auditorium Shores and continue hosting Fun Fun Fun Fest in downtown Austin – this is where we live and work every day” said James Moody, Festival promoter. “I am an 11 year resident of Bouldin Creek, and I look forward to working with stakeholders to make this event better for the community, year after year”.

Fun Fun Fun Fest has grown every year since its inception, focusing primarily on new music discovery, underground acts, and throwback favorites in a wide range of tastes and genres, including indie, hip hop, folk, comedy, punk, metal, and more. Ticket sale reports from 2011 confirm that 2011 was the biggest year ever, drawing 45% of attendees from Austin, 41% from Texas, 13% from the U.S. outside of Texas, and 1% from other countries.

Sonic Snogg Live @ Fun Fun Fun Fest: Mates of State

The Fun Fun Fun Fest Orange Stage upped its indie pop and cuteness factor by at least a factor of ten the moment Mates of State launched their set at 3:30 pm on Sunday, November 6, 2011. Mates of State formed in 1997, when Kori Gardner (keyboards/vocals/synthesizer) met Jason Hammel (drums/vocals/synthesizer) while they were both were playing in the band Vosotros in Lawrence, Kansas. Since then, the two have been inseparable. In 2001, after relocating to San Francisco, Hammel and Gardner married, were signed to indie darling label, Polyvinyl, and headed out on tour with Superdrag and The Anniversary. Thereafter, Mates of State released their second LP Our Constant Concern (Polyvinyl 2002), which served up sticky-sweet synth rock combined with equally sugary, starry-eyed lyrics. After taking a hiatus, The Mates of State moved to Seattle-based label Barsuk, beginning with the release of their fourth album Bring it Back (Barsuk 2006), illustrating stylistic maturity and adding greater dimension to their sound after the inclusion of guitar and bass. With the release of Re-arrange Us (Barsuk 2008), the Mates of State officially expanded their line-up to become a quartet, adding Lewis Patzner and Anton Patzner of Judgement Day to play various instruments. 2010's Crushes: The Covers Mixtape includes the Mates’ take on artists that may not often covered: Girls, Tom Waits, The Mars Volta, and Daniel Johnston, to name a few. The Mates of State recently released and have been touring to promote their sixth studio release, Moutaintops (Barsuk 2011), with their two adorable young children in tow.



From the moment the Mates of State start to play, the audience is immediately transported into an indie rock/pop-synth circus. Looking around, there is not one face in the crowd that isn’t smiling and not a single person who isn’t moving to the beat even as the misty rain comes down. Throughout the set, the unparalleled rich male/female harmonies showcase Gardner and Hammel’s intense and confident vocal style, neither afraid to swing into their upper registers. Lyrically, the Mates of State deliver supremely honest and often romantic musings, “I had a dream last night we lost the fight,” during “You are Free” off the Re-arrange Us album. The highest point in the set is the moment Mates of State deliver “Goods (All In Your Head)," off the All Day EP (Polyvinyl 2004) unleashing one of the most sing-a-long friendly indie songs and a dull roar of “duh, da, da, da, da, da, daah, ah,” ensues. Hammel closes out the set by sincerely saying, “We are the Mates of State. Thank you for listening and have a good festival!” As I walk away from the stage, I keep singing “it’s all in your head,” in my head and know it’s already been a great festival thanks, in part, to Mates of State.

Sonic Snogg Live @ Fun Fun Fun Fest: We Were Promised Jetpacks

It’s Sunday, November 6, 2011 and Scottish lads, We Were Promised Jetpacks, storm the Orange Stage, appearing unphased in their challenge to rock the faces off the exhausted and hung over audience barely awake even at 2:30pm on day three of Fun Fun Fun Fest. Kicking off the set with the first song off their newly released record, In the Pit of the Stomach (Fat Cat Records), “Circles and Squares,” the foursome deliver forcefully melodic riffs that melt over the male-dominated crowd like butter. One of my favorite We Were Promised Jetpacks’ songs “Quiet Little Voices,” off These Four Walls (Fat Cat Records, 2009), comes mid-set, instantly energizing the sluggish mob with its infectious and repeating chorus, declaring “I’m young again.” New tracks off the Stomach LP are intermixed with older tracks throughout the set. We Were Promised Jetpacks play their fast-paced and drum-heavy single “Medicine” played early in the set. New track “Act on Impulse” is the set’s peak despite its uniquely slow pace and delicate sound. This song’s complex and instrumental segments calm only for moments at a time, allowing crisp, confident vocals to creep in. The overall effect of this performance is near perfection. As the band finishes playing their final note, pure delight with a shot of adrenaline emanates from the formerly weary faces in the crowd, now appearing prepared to greet the final day of Fun Fun Fun Fest.

Sonic Snogg Live @ Fun Fun Fun Fest: M83

It’s 5:30 pm on Saturday, November 5, when M83 enter the Fun Fun Fun Fest Orange Stage, instantly greeted with grateful applause. The opportunity to see M83, fronted by Frenchman Anthony Gonzalez, certainly doesn’t come around too often and the audience anticipation resonates accordingly. Gonzalez settles in behind a waist-high, black gear rack, adorned with florescent pink and green embossing as his lovely band mate, Morgan Kibby, draws equal attention from behind her keyboard, clothed in gold shoes and a fly-away black tank. M83 kick off their set with “Reunion” off their new LP, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming (Mute Records, 2011) and the tone is set- upbeat, electro synth-pop that forces your body into involuntary, continuous motion. “Kim and Jessie” off the album, Saturdays = Youth (Mute Records, 2008) is the third song in the set and M83 waste no time serving up one of their most admired (and 80’s-inspired) sing-a-long singles. A few tracks later in the set, M83 declare, “it’s coming…it’s coming now,” during the dreamy track, “We Own the Sky.” I recall first hearing M83’s new single “Midnight City” while sitting through previews at the Alamo Drafthouse and falling instantly for the song’s airy vocals and infectious beats. Since the first listen, I have been wildly obsessing and thinking that all movie previews would automatically better if synched to this track. When M83 finally plays my favorite song near the end of their set, I can barely contain myself and I am not alone. The crowd sways to the beat as the set comes to an inevitable end, leaving no body unmoved and no mind unsure their high expectations have been thoroughly met.

Sonic Snogg Live @ Fun Fun Fun Fest: Girls

Girls enter the Fun Fun Fun Fest Orange Stage just before dusk, on Saturday November 5, 2011 and are immediately showered with warm applause. Girls includes permanent, founding members Christopher Owens (lead vocals, guitar) and Chet “JR” White (bass), as well as recording and/or touring members, Ryan William Lynch, Garett Godard, Matthew Kallman, Darren Weiss, Dan Eisenberg, and John Anderson. Owens, formerly a member of the Children of God cult, grew up with very little access to secular music, forming Girls in 2007 departing the cult, moving to San Francisco, CA, and meeting band mate White. Owens and White released Girls’ first effort, Album on True Panther Sounds in 2009, which received unexpected, enthusiastic media praise, including being named one of the ten best albums of 2009 by Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and Spin. After touring with big names like Smashing Pumpkins and Julian Casablancas, Girls returned to the studio to record their second LP, Father, Son, Holy Ghost (True Panther Sounds, 2011), which has also garnered critical acclaim.



When Girls take the stage, decorated in floral trimmings, at dusk, it is hard not to notice Owen’s Kurt Cobain-like appearance. However, as soon the first song begins, it’s clear that Nirvana hasn’t audibly influenced Girls’ original retro, lo-fi pop sound. Early in the set, Girls play crowd-favorite, “Laura,” just as the sun is setting behind the Austin skyline that served as the stage backdrop. A romantic, yet tragic vibe resonates over the fixated crowd as Owens sings, “reach out and touch me, I’m right here and I don’t want to fight anymore.” Sincere, relatable lyrics prevail throughout Girls’ set and perfectly set off the steady, velvety musical arrangements. This is especially apparent during the performance of new single, “Honey Bunny.” When Girls plays one of my favorite singles of 2009 and the highlight of the set, “Hellhole Ratrace,” I can’t imagine a single person in the crowd not being able to relate to Owen’s declaration, “I don’t want to cry my whole life through, I want to do some laughing too, so come on…and laugh with me.” Girls close out the set with “Lust for Life,” off Album and new song “Vomit” off Father just as the sun fades to black.

Sonic Snogg Live @ Fun Fun Fun Fest: Ty Segall

On November 4, 2011, just after 5pm, Ty Segall and his band take the Fun Fun Fun Fest Black Stage, enveloping the crowd in a cloud of dusty, filthy vintage punk. After performing throughout Orange County and San Francisco, including in garage revival band, The Epsilons, Ty Segall (vocals, guitar, drums) officially launched his solo career in 2008. Now, three years later, at the ripe young age of 23, Segall tours with band members Mikal Cronin (bass), Shayde Sartin (guitar), and Emily Rose (drums) and so far, has released four LPs as well as numerous singles/EPs.



After playing a short (yet sweet) set at the Mohawk for Fun Fun Fun Nites the night before, Ty Segall and company start their Friday evening set with a clear intention to throw down dirty garage rock like it’s 1965. In front of a Danzig backdrop (already up for the Black Stage headliners), Ty Segal begins the set with upbeat songs “Goodbye Bread,” and “You Make the Sun Fry,” off the newly released LP Goodbye Bread (Drag City 2011). As the set progresses, the pace picks up considerably, unleashing Segall’s ferocious screams and irate guitar. “You’re Not Me,” also off the new album is clearly the highlight of the set and is also the moment the mosh pit at the front of the stage starts to kick up so much dirt, my eyes start to burn. At the close of the set, Segall says he never wants to see his guitar again and hands it off to an elated young fan. So, Ty Segall did not give me a free guitar and my eyes are itchy after the set, yet I walk away from the stage feeling euphoric like my mind just got injected with a lethal dose of awesome.

Sonic Snogg Live @ Fun Fun Fun Fest: Yacht

Yacht takes the Blue Stage at Fun Fun Fun Fest on Friday, November 4th just after 4pm, entrancing the crowd with body-rocking electro-pop. Originally formed in Oregon in 2002 by Jona Bechtolt, Yacht became a duo after adding permanent member Claire Evans in 2009. Yacht has since expanded to include current touring members Rob Kieswetter (vocals, bass, keyboard), Jeffery Broadsky (drums, percussion), and Katy Davidson (guitar, keyboard, vocals).



Amazingly, the first glimpse of Ryan Gosling filming with director, Terrence Malick, onstage during Yacht’s Fun Fun Fun Fest set barely even distracts the captive spectators from pursuing a righteous afternoon dance party. Not even an A-list heartthrob could compete visually with the ever-enchanting Evans, clad in a skin-tight, partially see-through white mini dress and sporting her signature Annie Lennox-inspired, cropped hair. Evans vocals remain unbelievably flawless throughout the set as Bechtolt and company expertly deliver Yacht’s supremely synth-heavy dance-pop, never failing to energize the pulsating crowd. Musical highlights during the set include the moments Yacht performed the ever-infectious “Psychic City” off the album See Mystery Lights (DFA, 2011) and the equally catchy “Dysopia (the Earth is on Fire)” off the newly-released LP, Shangri-la (DFA, 2011). During both songs, audience participation was so prevalent that Evans could have easily decided to take a microphone break. Luckily, the only break Yacht takes is at the close of their set, when Fun Fun Fun Fest patrons return to reality in time to recall Ryan Gosling’s presence and shift their frenzy accordingly from the front to the back of the Blue Stage to catch a glimpse.

Beat Connection: Black Lips live at Fun Fun Fun Fest

Flaming guitars, toilet paper, firecrackers, vomit, and enough beer to fill a bath tub, yep Atlanta, Georgia's Black Lips set at Fun Fun Fun Fest Sunday evening just about had it all. The self described "flower punks" have been banned from performing at a multitude of venues including the entire country of India in an infamous episode in which the band had to flee the country to escape Indian authorities after a particularly rowdy performance, so it was only natural that the band take the Black Stage late into the final night of the festival. With spooky, bare bones lighting and a homemade backdrop with the band's name spray painted on a white bed sheet just moments before the set began, Black Lips gave off the feeling of being in an appropriately dingy club instead of a large outdoor venue. Guitarist Ian Saint Pé began the set by quickly shotgunning a beer before the band ripped into set opener "Sea of Blasphemy", a veritable sign of things to come from a band that was already noticeably intoxicated well before the set began. That is of course a major part of Black Lips' appeal: they're dirty, sloppy, rule breakers who sometimes intimidate but more often invite audiences with their distinctive blend of blues, garage rock, R&B, country, and punk that the band somehow manages to roll up into fractured blasts of power pop. Guitarist/vocalist Cole Alexander was in top form (for Black Lips) ripping into noisy guitar solos, vomiting onstage, using his wildly swinging voice to shock and freak out the audience, and finally lighting his guitar on fire, smashing it, and tossing it into the audience. The 17 song setlist used the band's newest album, the Mark Ronson produced Arabia Mountain (2011) as a touchstone but played rousing takes on favorites like "Oh Katrina!" and "Bad Kids" as well for a set that was shocking and scary but came out as one big party through it all.

Beat Connection: Ted Leo and the Pharmacists live at Fun Fun Fun Fest

With a brutal and inconvenient sore throat on a muggy day, if anyone needed some French onion soup and a Wendy's chicken sandwich it was Ted Leo. But the tough as nails New Jersey native and pop punk lifer works too damn hard to call if quits when vocal troubles arise and as such, Leo pushed through, delivering a set full of his punchy hardcore pop rockers and a few amusingly charming surprises. Ted Leo and the Pharmacists hit the stage with all the grit and fire expected of them despite Leo's normally crystal clean vocals being tarnished. The singer pushed his voice to the greatest extremes he could take it, sometimes losing his voice entirely, but displaying classic DIY punk attitude in the process. In fact, the band's songs sounded tougher and rawer with Leo's vocals roughed up by the throaty scratch of a 24 hour bug. While Leo and the Pharmacists tore through older classics and cuts from their newest album The Brutalist Bricks (2011) with playful pop punk bounce and high musical proficiency as a trio, the real treat came near the set's end when Leo announced to the crowd "It's too damn cold" ran to the side of the stage and shortly returned in a Glenn Danzig wig and black sleeveless shirt to end the set with a few of the Misfits covers the crowd missed out on thanks to the now infamous meltdown from Danzig: Legacy. Apologizing for "his behavior" as Danzig, Leo led the crowd in rousing takes on Misfits favorites, leaping into the audience and letting fans take the mic when his own vocals couldn't hold out. WIth perseverance and good natured humor, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists won the crowd over and delighted their already devoted fans.

Beat Connection: Dan Deacon live at Fun Fun Fun Fest

When a set begins with the words "This is going to sound weird but then again, when hasn't it?" you know you are going to be in for a one of a kind experience. Baltimore, Maryland weirdo Dan Deacon brought his unique blend of homemade electronics and endorphin rushing dance beats to the Blue Stage on Saturday bringing along his notoriously fun live show as well. Deacon got down into the crowd for direct interaction, organizing the crowd into group rituals and dance offs. Unfortunately, Deacon was beset by sound issues throughout the set and had to end his set early when he actually blew out the stage's speakers. For a few euphoric minutes however, Dan Deacon's set was a rush, being unlike any live performance out there today.

Beat Connection: Girls live at Fun Fun Fun Fest

Playing before a picturesque backdrop of festively strung bulb lights, charmingly off kilter backing panels, and elegant bouquets of flowers tied around mic stands, San Francisco's Girls played an absolutely beautiful set with a richly produced sound and a set list that comprised of a perfect mix of high energy and spine tingling low points. Girls focused on tracks from their outstanding sophomore LP Father, Son, Holy Ghost (2011) and played a few select cuts from their debut Album (2009) and one selected track, "Heartbreaker" from their Broken Dreams Club EP (2010). Girls brought the fully fleshed out sound of Father, Son, Holy Ghost to life, not skipping a beat even on twisting and turing tracks like "Die" and "Vomit", displaying a surprisingly high level of musicality without alienating themselves from the crowd. The set felt intensely intimate at times, despite the hundreds of people gathered around the outdoor stage and perhaps an overly zealous crowd, as when frontman Christopher Owens would handle solo guitar and vocals on tracks like "Hellhole Ratrace" and on the understated soul of "Love Like a River". Girls put on a set that became a Day 2 highlight, making each member of the audience feel personally affected by the music being played.

Shows & Shots: Slayer Shirts Reign @ Fun Fun Fun Fest

Last night at the 6th annual Fun Fun Fun Fest, the festival of all Funs, Slayer massacred an eager audience at the Orange Stage. Even if you weren’t at the fest, chances are you probably heard the echoes of the thunderous metal booming through the city of Austin. The band slayed festival-goers with their 24 Marshall Amplifier set-up and a deafening selection of songs including “Dead Skin Mask,” “Raining Blood,” and “Angel of Death.”

Beat Connection: Ty Segall live at Fun Fun Fun Fest

Fresh off the voodoo vibes of last week's Halloween, California garage rocker Ty Segall brought an appropriately freaky set to the Black Stage on Friday, offering up manic yelps and screams, buzzsaw guitar tones, and his signature skewed and nightmarish brand of garage punk. Segall whipped the crowd into a frenzy letting go of himself and allowing the music to take him and his band in what ever direction that seemed appropriate, playing a set that was at times downright scary, but powerful and thrilling just the same. The cuts from Segall's newest album, the more tame by comparison Goodbye Bread (2011), were given a horrific overhaul to fit the evil sounding punk sludge of Segall's earlier work, making the set feel cohesive and well thought out among the rush of anger and energy that was being displayed on stage.

Beat Connection: Yacht live at Fun Fun Fun Fest

Portland/Marfa, TX/Los Angeles' Yacht blasted out of the gate as they stormed the Blue Stage this afternoon. With an incalculable amount of live energy, Yacht grabbed the audience's attention one way or another, whether it be the smoothly suggestive dance moves of frontwoman Claire L. Evans or the irresistible bubble gum of the bouncy, pounding disco rock of their most recent album, Shangri-La (2011). Allowing spontaneity to take hold, Yacht allowed the performance's high points to exist where you least expected them as in when Evans made her way into the crowd for a few close up interactions and an electro-punk cover of The B-52s' "Mesopotamia". With showcasings of hits like "Dystopia (The Earth is on Fire)", "Utopia", and "Psychic City" Yacht thrilled the crowd and became an early festival highlight.

Taylor, Texas based non-pro t Project LOOP recently teamed up with Cary Jackson of Califormia based CA Rampwworks, Brown Boards and Austin based Transmission Entertainment to build a half pipe skate ramp for their annual music festival Fun Fun Fun Fest, an event which is expected to draw 50,000 spectators. LOOP students worked a full weekend under the guidance of Cary Jackson of California based CA Rampworks and Chris Carrasquillo, owner of Brown Skateboards. “It‘s great to see kids get a hands on experience of building a ramp they will inturn get to enjoy” Mr. Jackson said. LOOP students invited University of Texas Architecture students to help out in the build as well, many of which are skaters.

Asobi Seksu (1:55) Orange Stage

Kick off your final day of music and good times with Asobi Seksu, a band of blissful New York shoegazers who deliver as much punch as pop. One of the biggest names in the modern shoegaze scene, Asobi Seksu deals in dream pop similar in style to Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine with their own spaced out take on the sound. A nice middle ground between aggressive and tripped out to begin your day after shaking off the after effects of last night's activities.

Grimes (3:00) Blue Stage

As Grimes, Montreal's Claire Boucher is an artist purely of the 21st century, making creepy, otherworldly pop songs that sound like they would top the charts in galaxies far far away. Recording completely on her own using only garageband to make her airy songs come to life, Grimes has been an artist slowly making a name for herself in the experimental scene with songs that stick with you for their pop pastiche but offer a sense of the truly strange with their featherweight density. On stage, Boucher performs alone with only a microphone, keyboard, and sampler pulling off alien dance moves and entertaining with her casual style and approachable personality. Grimes is another artist on the cusp of being the next big thing, so catch her set and be able to say you knew about her before everyone else does.

Keep Shelly in Athens (12:45) Orange Stage

Kick off day two of the weekend with the heady electro pop of up and comers Keep Shelly in Athens. Influenced by slithering R&B, smooth jazz, ominous dark wave, and haunting electronica, Keep Shelly in Athens has been making waves lately on the strength of their newest single "DIY", a ghostly track that combines a bopping industrial drum beat against groovy looped piano and punching horn arrangements. Keep Shelly in Athens are sure to be a band to watch in the next few months so catch them early next weekend.

Purity Ring (1:30) Blue Stage

Purity Ring is another somewhat mysterious electronica group just getting their feet off the ground, but making some major reverberations in the scene as of now. Currently on tour with Neon Indian and Com Truise, Purity Ring makes a self described brand of "future pop" that combines robotic electronica, J Dilla referencing stutter beats, and angelic but angular and detached vocals. Though the term future pop can be seen as somewhat pretentious from such a young band, you do get the idea of what they're talking about as Purity Ring's songs can often sound like Beyonce collided with "2001: A Space Odyssey". Purity RIng will be another name going around, so you'll be able to say you knew about them before they blew up.

Joe Lally (1:55) Orange Stage

As a founding member of iconic punk rockers Fugazi, Joe Lally became known as one of the most influential bassists in underground music and after starting a small musical revolution, Fugazi decided to go on hiatus back in 2003. Joe Lally on the other hand has continued making music as a solo artist, working with a unique style of songwriting grounded mostly in the bass guitar and his own vocals, creating a unique style of open and fluid jazz punk with his own relaxed vocal delivery. Lally's inspired and individualistic solo work has a quiet intensity that translates well to a live concert and makes for a nice contrast to the quirky electronica of the day so far.

Trash Talk (3:15) Black Stage

Follow up the punk lite of Joe Lally with the hammering hardcore of Sacramento, CA's Trash Talk. This band does hardcore the old fashioned way, loud, fast, and angry as evidenced by their latest critically acclaimed five song, nine minute EP Awake (2011). Trash Talk is hardcore to a T, with shows often ending in bloody noses and bruised ribs, just the way a good punk rock show should.

Beat Connection: Fun Fun Fun Fest Artist Interview - Joe Lally

As the bassist for D.C. punk icons Fugazi, Joe Lally has spent nearly a lifetime in music both as a bassist and singer/songwriter. For a generation of punks, indie rockers, and straight edgers, Fugazi has served as a jumping off point for many of the cornerstones of underground music including hardcore, post-punk, and noise rock and after the band went on indefinite hiatus in 2003, Lally took it upon himself to continue writing, recording, and performing, now with his own original solo material built mostly from raw bass lines and vocals. Lally's newest album Why Should I Get Used to It (2011) displays some of the most straightforward songwriting the bassist/singer/songwriter has ever been apart of as a solo artist and subsequently, the new album represents perhaps Lally's strongest solo offering to date. Lally will be playing this year's Fun Fun Fun Fest Saturday November 5 at the Orange Stage. I caught up with Joe Lally via email correspondence to ask about the new album, his beliefs surrounding the state of punk music, and the future of his influential band.


Beat Connection: From your first solo albums you seem to have progressed from intense self-imposed minimalism to more of a charmingly ragged feel on your new record. What accounts for the change in sound and approach?


Joe Lally: There's a few reasons for that. I couldn't sing much at first, it was more like talking. The music got built around that feeling of speaking intimately with someone. I also arranged the music in a different way. I wrote for a rhythm section leaving a space that was to be filled by a lead instrument like guitar, sax, or keyboard. That still occurred on Philosphy For Insects, but even with that song the new album is mainly different because I really knew what each song would sound like when I went in to record. I didn't know that with the first two albums. I found out as we went along.


Beat Connection: Was the writing process more collaborative on this album or more driven by your own songwriting? How has your songwriting changed as a singer/songwriter from your first album?


Joe Lally: In a way it's less collaborative. Although at times I was writing to a particular person's playing, I was actually writing more myself. For the first time I wrote guitar parts and over all I think I can hear the music coming more easily when I'm writing.

Jim Ward (1:40) Orange Stage

After giving the festival grounds a walk through and getting yourself situated, you can kick the day off with the low-key indie rock punch of former At the Drive In/Sparta/Sleepercar member Jim Ward. Ward's music carries the fire of early grunge mixed with pop leanings of groups like Pearl Jam and a subtle influence from the early emo heart on sleeve directness Sunny Day Real Estate and Weezer.


Cloud Nothings (2:20) Orange Stage


Stick around for Cleveland's lo-fi pop punk favorites Cloud Nothings. The band, raised on the bratty thrash of groups like Blink 182 and Sum 41, took it upon themselves to take what by some would be considered somewhat embarrassing influences and cover them in sloshy distortion and overdrive, creating an energetic and direct style of lo-fi indie punk that can punish as much as it pleases. Think of Wavves but from the exceedingly unpretentious Midwest.

Sonic Snogg: Fun Fun Fun Fest Artist Profile – M83

M83 embark on the American leg of the international tour in support of the newly released epic double album, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming (Mute Records, 2011). Named after a spiral galaxy, Messier 83, M83 was formed in 2001 by frontman Anthony Gonzalez and former member Nicolas Fromageau in Antibes, France. Fromageau parted ways with Gonzalez following the completion of the tour for their second album, Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts (Gooom/Labels France, 2003). Anthony Gonzalez now mainly records on his own, but often with the help of his brother, Yann Gonzalez, along with Morgan Kibby (vocals/keyboard), and Loïc Maurin (drums). Following the release of their critically acclaimed fifth studio album, Saturdays = Youth (Mute Records, 2008), M83’s popularity began to pick up considerable speed internationally with the singles “Kim & Jessie” and “We Own the Sky” showcasing the 80’s electronic pop theme of the album. This new-found esteem, resulted in M83 joining three huge tours in 2008 and 2009, Kings of Leon, The Killers, and Depeche Mode.



The first time I encountered M83 was through their remix of the Block Party track, “The Pioneers” and you might say it was music crush at first listen. Thereafter, I sought out other M83 remixes that only furthered my infatuation including, “Black Cherry” by Goldfrapp, “Suffer Well” by Depeche Mode, “To the Sky” by Maps, and “Fall” by Daft Punk, just to name a few. It was just a matter of time before I sought out their original material, where I became thoroughly smitten by the fusion of expertly layered ambient electronic dream pop with reverb-heavy and airy vocals. Bold statement time: so far, “Midnight City” is my pick for best single of this year and consequently, I can honestly say there is no band that I am more excited to see play live for the first time. M83 will be playing at Fun Fun Fun Fest on Saturday, November 5th on the Orange Stage, TBA.

FUN FUN FUN FEST ANNOUNCES THEIR FINAL LINE-UP SCHEDULE FOR THE FESTIVAL AND AFTER-SHOWS

FFFF6 Set To Pack the Weekend from Day to Night with Performances from Acts Ranging from Public Enemy to Slayer and Passion Pit

AUSTIN, TX (October 18, 2011) – Fun Fun Fun Fest has announced the final lineup with set times happening November 4th – November 6th, 2011 at Auditorium Shores. They have also solidified their FFF Nites aftershow lineup, which will be free to FFFF 6 ticket holders based on capacity and type of ticket.

Times for the festival will begin Friday at noon and go until 9:45 pm each night. Each of the four stages will be billed with artists from various genres like Lykke Li, M83, Girls, Passion Pit, Slayer, Major Lazer, Odd Future and comedy routines from Donald Glover, Reggie Watts, Anarchy Championship Wrestling as well as a special performance from Henry Rollins.

FFF NITES is specifically curated to be an extension of the fest itself, and allow for the Fun Fun Fun experience to continue after the park closes. There will be shows featuring Ty Segall, Dead Confederate, Dom and Royal Bangs as well as DJ sets from Syd The Kyd (OFWGKTA), Neon Indian, and Passion Pit among others. FFFF 6 bands Grimes, Cold Cave, Mates of State, The Oh Sees and many more will all be playing as well.

All shows are happening at classic Red River venues like The Mohawk, Red 7, Beerland, Beauty Bar, ND, The Parish and Empire Automotive, transforming one of Austin’s favorite districts into the nighttime version of Fun Fun Fun Fest.

In other fest news, Fun Fun Fun Fest announced today that the Boxer Rebellion has canceled their US tour due to a family emergency and will not be appearing at FFFF 6. Also, Slayer has moved to the Orange Stage for bigger production, lights, and full force legendary metal experience.

When asked about this announcement, FFF Founder Graham Williams said, “Its exciting to be announcing our first ever 3 full day schedule times in conjunction with the first ever free FFF Nites for our ticket holders. Sonic Snogg: Fun Fun Fun Fest Artist Profile – Black Lips

Black Lips have been hailed by major media outlets as one 2011’s biggest indie buzz bands after teaming up with Deer Hunter guitarist, Lockett Pundt, and celebrated producer Mark Ronsen to record their latest LP, Arabia Mountain (Vice Records, 2011). Ronsen, well-known for his work with Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, Adele, and Ghostface Killah, takes the band in a “New Direction,” which is also the first single of the new album. The Black Lips began humbly in Atlanta, Georgia in 1999 and initially garnered notoriety for their outrageous and often disgusting onstage antics, including fighting, vomiting, urination, and nudity during their live performances. Their previous albums, Good Bad Not Evil (Vice Records, 2007) and 200 Million Thousand (Vice Records, 2011) received impressive critical accolades and their fanbase picked up considerable pace after their performance on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” and having their songs featured in indie films 500 Days of Summer and Scott Pilgram v. the World. The current line-up, Cole Alexander (Vocals/Guitar), Jared Swilley (vocals/bass), Ian Saint Pé (guitar), and Joe Bradley (vocals, drums), have revealed The Black Lips’ complex, more refined, flower punk sound, which provides some distance from their notoriety for onstage debauchery, yet without compromising their signature, rough around the edges style.



While the tag certainly fits, to characterize The Black Lips simply as a garage/punk band is a bit inane. Often drawing comparisons to fellow lo-fi enthusiasts like The Black Keys and Jay Reatard, The Black Lips have demonstrated a standout presence within this subgenre by effectively infusing R&B, doo-wop, psychedelic, country, gospel, and even hip-hop into their signature throw-back style. The Black Lips have also embraced the vintage concept of releasing split EPs. In the past few years, The Black Lips have released an impressive number of splits, including with The King Khan & BBQ Show, The Dirtbombs, YACHT, and Subsonics. I first caught The Black Lips live during SXSW in 2007 at Beerland and was instantly taken with their raw, confrontational intensity. After their set, I recall being unable to shake the song “Bad Kids,” out of my head. I have not had the chance to see them play since, so luckily, The Black Lips will be playing at Fun Fun Fun Fest, on the Black Stage on Sunday, November 6th, TBA.

We Were Promised Jetpacks are currently on tour to promote their second full-length studio LP, In the Pit of the Stomach (Fat Cat Records), just released earlier this month. The quartet’s latest album follows up their first album, These Four Walls (Fat Cat Records, 2009). We Were Promised Jetpacks formed in 2003 after Adam Thompson (vocals, guitar), Michael Palmer (guitar), Sean Smith (bass), and Darren Lackie (drums) won a “Battle of the Bands” competition at their school in Edinburgh, Scotland. Since then, We Were Promised Jetpacks have attracted a considerable following and critical success opening up for fellow Scots and label mates, Frightened Rabbit, as well as for US bands Bad Veins, Bear Hands, and Jimmy Eat World. We Were Promised Jetpacks’ music has music has been showcased on television shows and in feature films. The song “An Almighty Thud” appeared on an episode of the television show Sons of Anarchy and the single “Quiet Little Voices” was also featured in the 2011 Owen Wilson comedy, Hall Pass.).



I was able to catch We Were Promised Jetpacks and Frightened Rabbit play The Scottish Arts Council Showcase at The Parish during SXSW 2010 and these shows were two of my highlights. I would not usually consider myself a fan of indie pop/ post-punk bands, but We Were Promised Jetpacks is the exception to this rule. I suppose I am easily smitten by commanding vocals, infectious melodies, crystal clear riffs, and lyrics that invite everyone to sing and jump along. I’m particularly partial to songs, “Medicine” and “Burning Buildings” off their latest release and cannot wait to see We Were Promised Jetpacks perform them live. These charming lads are set to perform at Fun Fun Fun Fest on Sunday, November 6th on the Orange Stage, time TBA.

Beat Connection: Fun Fun Fun Fest Artist Profile – Hot Snakes

San Diego post-hardcore touchstones Hot Snakes were never designed to innovate. They were instead designed to knock down doors and kick in the teeth of anyone foolish enough to get in their way. Lacerating guitars, drumming barreling down the pike like a freight train, bass thick and heavy enough to rumble apartment walls and trunks almost too easily, the yelping vocals of Rick Froberg which admittedly don't have the thrashing grit of classic hardcore singers like Ian McKaye or Henry Rollins but still communicate a street smart confidence that forces you to stop, look, listen, and probably mosh to what Hot Snakes does best all pile into a mix which creates a thundering attack of post-punk and straight up hardcore. Directly born from the unholy union between college rock icons Drive Like Jehu and Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes is one band in a continuing series of projects that have come as a result of the friendship and artistic collaboration between guitarist/vocalist Froberg and guitarist/vocalist John Reis. Having each had a hand in countless numbers of bands and side projects, Froberg and Reis started their careers in post-punk group Pitchfork before going on to form Drive Like Jehu with Reis later forming Rocket from the Crypt. Drive Like Jehu disbanded in 1995 with Froberg leaving San Diego for New York City to begin a career as a visual artist while Reis continued with Rocket to the Crypt until 2005 but in 1999, the two friends came together to begin what would start as a "side project" and would eventually become the howling, snarling punk rock beast that is Hot Snakes.

Reggie Watts: one part comedic genius, one part exceptional musician, one part peculiar performance artist, and all parts awesome. Hailing from Seattle, WA, Watts gained considerable mainstream notoriety after opening up for Conan O’Brien during his 2010 "Prohibited From Being Funny on Television" tour. Also in 2010, Reggie Watts released his debut comedy cd/dvd Why Shit So Crazy? (Comedy Central Records). Watts continues to promote his recent release, Live at Third Man Records (Third Man Records, 2011), following up his previous EP, Pot Cookies (Normative Records, 2008) and LP, Simplified (Non-Linear Productions, 2004).



Reggie Watts fits firmly in the space between comedian and musician and is perhaps the only live performer I can imagine seamlessly transitioning between beat-boxing/rapping songs like “Shit Fuck Stack” and stream of conscience spoken-word narration in an affected British accent that morphs into German without skipping a loop-track beat. I thoroughly adore Watts’ absurdly-named tracks like, “Do You Like Pterodactyls?” and “Smurfs is People Too,” but I also don’t expect to hear any track as recorded during his live show, as each set is organic, surreal, and even slightly disorienting. Beat Connection: Fun Fun Fun Fest Artist Interview – Neon Indian

Neon Indian’s Alan Palomo has never been one to shy away from an adventure. After the take off success of his band’s debut album Psychic Chasms (2009), Palomo shipped off from his Denton, TX home to Brooklyn to form a new home base and take advantage of all types of wild opportunities including working with The Flaming Lips on an EP of post-apocalyptic musical expressionism, putting out a single for Mountain Dew’s Green Label Sound label with Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor producing, developing and making an informerical for his own brand of synthesizer, and now most recently, heading out on tour with Kreayshawn, an artist that could very well be perceived as being Palomo’s polar opposite. For his band’s new album Era Extraña (2011), Palomo followed his sense of adventure in the dead of winter to Helsinki, Finland to record the album completely alone. The album that has come as a product of those sessions and that experience is one of greater musical, physical, and emotional depth than anything Neon Indian has released in the past, giving listeners an album that can be discussed and pondered over as easily as it can be danced to. I caught up with Palomo over the phone before Neon Indian was scheduled to play a show in Portland to talk about the new record, his writing and recording process, and some of that adventurous spirit that makes Neon Indian's music such a thrill.

Beat Connection: On the new album Era Extraña it feels like there’s a darker tone to the music than on Psychic Chasms and moodier arrangements. What made you want to use a broader sound palette on this album?

Alan Palomo: In a strange way many of the aspects of this album felt like a rite of passage by going into the studio and limiting myself. I guess I’ve always enjoyed the idea of tying one hand behind your back and using those limitations to help you really shape the sound of a record.
Like for example on this record it was kind of important to not use samples just because a lot of the first record was based on creating these loops from these pre-exisiting pieces of music and then write arrangements over it and then at some point I put this tape warbled sheen over everything. But this time around I wanted to work with individual sounds that were already a little bit fucked up in nature and then see if I could combine them and make a song out of that. I guess I just wanted to change my approach and keep it interesting for me.

When getting into a discussion about electronica, certain names will inevitably come up. Daft Punk, Aphex Twin, Burial, all artists who have changed the face of electronic music forever but when talking about the real movers and shakers of electronic music today, it is almost impossible to pass up Kieran Hebden, the man behind Four Tet. Working under the guise of electronica producer and artist, Hebden has done more to progress electronic music as Four Tet in a few short years than lesser artists have throughout entire careers. When one normally thinks of electronica, there are certain defined sounds and a uniform style that one thinks must go into the definition of electronica, but since the end of the 20th century, Four Tet has vastly expanded the scope of electronica by embracing the multitude of genres that exist outside of the confines of the computer and the turntable. Four Tet pulls not only from the techno and ambient music that has influenced countless electronic artists but from post rock, free jazz, soul and R&B, hip hop, folk, and indie rock, and applies those myriad influences to a style of electronica that feels warm, lived in, and wonderfully human in a way that so many of Four Tet's contemporaries either are incapable of producing or shy away from. As Four Tet, Kieran Hebden is redefining the meaning of electronica to create something that is hardly like anything else being created today.

AUSTIN, TX (August 18, 2011) –: Fun Fun Fun Fest announced today some new additions to this year’s festival lineup, including SPOON, Black Lips, Cannibal Corpse, Omar Souleyman, Sergio “Sexy Sax Man” Flores and more. The 6th annual festival will be held November 4 – 6, 2011 at Auditorium Shores in Austin, TX.

SPOON are returning after headlining the inaugural FFF fest in 2006, which also happens to be their only date, in U.S. or Europe, in 2011. They are performing along with punk and garage kings, the Black Lips, American death metal band Cannibal Corpse, Syrian pop sensation Omar Souleyman, and more. These late additions join previously announced headlining acts such as Passion Pit, Slayer, Public Enemy, The Damned, Hot Snakes (reunion), Hum, and Danzig Legacy Tour. And, as a special treat the guys at Fun Fun Fun Fest are bringing in Sergio “Sexy Sax Man” Flores, whom you may remember from his sexy sax serenades in shopping malls on YouTube (currently @ over 8MM views) to sax up the crowd between sets.

Some new additions have also been added to this year’s yellow stage, including the Air Sex Competition, Dating Game, New Movement Comedy, Rap Battle Royal, Master Pancake’s Video Jukebox, Brett Gelman, Adira Amram, Johnny Pemberton, Cameron Buchholt, Jake Flores, and Doug Mellard. The new acts join the already announced Henry Rollins, Reggie Watts, Brian Posehn, Upright Citizens Brigade, Turquoise Jeep and more.

FFF is also proud to announce the first ever Fun Fun Fun Fest Water Olympics, which will take place in Austin at Fiesta Gardens on September 11th. The fest will celebrate its new location on the banks of Town Lake at Auditorium Shores by offering contests where the winners can take home great prizes, such as weekend passes to the fest. Contests will include stand up paddle board jousting, freestyle, and high kick competitions, as well as canoe jousting, canoe/kayak/SUP relay races and more. Registration starts at noon, and the event goes from 2 – 6pm. Austin Facial Hair Club, stars of the new hit series “Whisker Wars,” will be providing the food, security, and grooming tips.

The festival will also hold the annual Austin scavenger hunt on October 1st, which is notorious for sending music fans on a mad dash around town marking bizarre and sometimes filthy deeds off their target lists in an effort to win passes and other Fun Fun Fun gear. The 2011 headliners include everything from indie dance darlings Passion Pit to heavy metal gods Slayer, from hip hop legends Public Enemy to punk icons The Damned. This year, FFF reunions include Hot Snakes, who disbanded in 2005 at the height of their popularity, Hum, who have not been consistently active as a recording or touring group since 2000, and Glenn Danzig playing Misfits songs for the first time in years with original Misfits guitarist Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein. More bands are planned to be added to the full FFF line up in Aug/Sep.

When asked about this year’s event, Graham Williams, FFF Founder had this to say: “It’s been so hard to keep the lid on everything we have been working on, there are so many exciting bands and acts this year, and so many more to come.” He added “This is clearly the best bill we have ever put together, and I can’t wait to watch it all happen in November.”

Today we're proud to announce that there will be a THIRD FULL DAY OF FUN FUN FUN FEST 2011. Three days of FFF? HELL YES. This means more bands, more DJs, more comedians, more jorts, more vendors, more everything fun on Auditorium Shores this November.

Not to bore you with politics, but we've been working closely with the City of Austin on this for a while, and last week were given their blessing to add Friday, November 4th to FFF6. As announced earlier today, the sixth edition of my beloved Fun Fun Fun Fest will take place at Auditorium Shores. I’m pretty stoked about this. A much larger space, a lot less dust boogers, and a beautiful backdrop are just few of the clear benefits of this switch. Of course, I’ll miss the proximity to the 'hawk and Red 7 but as far as I can tell, the pros outweigh the cons for the most part.

Tickets will be sold in three phases via the website. The biggest discount will be available in Phase One, aptly named Fun #1, starting late May – only Fun Fest members will have access so I recommend signing up ASAP. And new this year -- the Guess The Fest contest where you could win some sweet prizes by correctly guessing Fun Fest 2011 performers.

Fun Fun Fun Fest Moves To Auditorium Shores

With the New Move the Fest Will Grow in Size and Capabilities

Austin, Texas (April 28, 2011) – Fun Fun Fun Fest, one of the premier independent music festivals in the country, announced today that they will be moving from their Waterloo Park location of 5 years to Auditorium Shores this year to accommodate the growing size and popularity of the event.

Founded in 2006 by Graham Williams, Fun Fun Fun Fest has been known for its consistent commitment to discovering new talent and unearthing new ideas in music and comedy, while also working to pay homage to key legends in the independent music scene. The 6th Annual Fun Fun Fun Fest will take place Nov. 5 – 6, this year at Austin’s Auditorium Shores. There will also be a festival kick off event on Friday November 4th.

In addition to the progressive and seminal underground acts the festival is known for, promoters plan to diversify the lineup this year with new genres and performers as well as introducing new on-site activities, comedy, food, shopping, and more.

As a 10 year resident of the Bouldin Creek neighborhood, a former board member of the Long Center, and a founding member of AMP, James Moody has been working with Parks, the City of Austin, AMP, The Long Center, the Palmer Events Center, and other stakeholders to help make this exciting addition a smooth transition for all involved.

“We are looking forward to this move. “ says James Moody, partner at FFFF. “It’s the right time for us. After maxing out Waterloo Park last year, we realized we needed more space to deliver on some of our new ideas and offer our fans what they expect”.

Graham Williams said “I am very excited about this. With more room and better access, we can do some of things that we could never do at Waterloo. We have been able to get more creative with bookings, production, layout, and vendors. I look forward to watching it all come together”.

Frenchie, who is also the brains behind much of the magic that occurs at The Bubble, recently launched his own label, the aptly named Frenchie Smith Records.

Descendents Unite to Headline Fun Fun Fun Fest 2010

Austin, Texas (October 29, 2010) - Fun Fun Fun Fest is proud to announce the addition of The Legendary Descendents to the lineup of the 5th annual music and comedy event in Waterloo Park November 5-7, 2010. The reunion show of this elusive and world renowned pop punk act will replace the Sunday headlining spot previously held by Devo.

The Descendents' performance at Fun Fun Fun Fest this year marks their first with the full band in almost a decade. The Descendents will be joined by the late additions of Nacional Records' Nortec Collective Presents Bostich + Fussible; the melodic and chillwave sounds of Washed Out; the subdued indie sounds of The Antlers; and the indie break-out band, Cults.

"I really can't believe it. The Descendents were one of those bands on my dream list that I thought I would never get to book" Says Graham Williams, FFF Founder. "A week ago, we had no idea what we were going to do, and now we couldn't be more happy".

Costume Contest at Frank Rec Room Tomorrow! Win a pair of Fun Fest tickets!

It appears that Fun Fun Fun Fest isn’t content with Red River dominance. This morning, the juggernaut rolled into Frank, the artisan hot dog establishment on 4th St., and apparently transformed Wednesday evening's Rec Room menu.

The specially priced menu (could go either way really) features wieners inspired by the colors of the four Fun Fest stages: the Orange Stage dog (deep fried hot dog, wrapped in bacon, slammed in hot wing sauce and topped with blue cheese), the Black Stage dog (split dog, wrapped in bacon, fried and topped with mustard BBQ sauce), the Blue Stage dog (battered and deep fried hot dog topped with sausage gravy), and the Yellow Stage dog (chili dog smothered in cheese, caramelized onions and jalapenos). I recommend getting there early (Rec Room kicks off at 9 p.m.) since this exclusive menu is extremely limited, much like the remaining Fun Fest tix from what I gather.

But there's more. Fun Fest's involvement has coerced the Rec Room to declare this Wednesday's gathering the official "win Fun Fest tix by wearing awesome costumes" contest. The patron in the best costume (voted upon by Daniel Northcutt, Brendan Hannah, Chris Apollo Lynn, and I) will receive two tickets to this year's Fun Fest (Saturday and Sunday); two runner-ups will receive gift certificates to Frank. Fun Fest’s Scavenger Hunt

We’re just weeks away from this year’s Fun Fun Fun Fest, which can only mean one thing -- the time is ripe for the annual Fun Fest Scavenger Hunt! The head honchos at Transmission Entertainment are meticulously crafting this year’s to-do-list even as I type. Last year, ardent fans kissed senior citizens, rode mechanical bulls, indulged in hanky panky with the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue, photographed cops who didn’t have a moustache, and what not. All in the name of glory…and Fun Fest. Your typical scavenger hunt this is not!

There are some truly fabulous goodies up for grabs this year, including of course, free passes to the festival itself. If you already have your ticket, I still encourage you to join in on the mayhem. You could very well be upgraded to PIP or win one of many, many other wonderful prizes. Get the complete lowdown below.

Brian Posehn is an American actor and comedian, known for his roles as mail clerk Kevin Liotta on NBC's Just Shoot Me!, as a cast member of HBO's Mr. Show, and as Brian Spukowski on Comedy Central's The Sarah Silverman Program. Movie appearances from Posehn include the 2003 comedy film sequel Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, Grind, the 2005 Rob Zombie horror film The Devil's Rejects, Sleeping Dogs Lie, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and the 2007 animated feature Surf's Up, where he played Glen Maverick. Posehn appeared as himself in Super High Me, a 2007 documentary starring 'marijuana comedian' Doug Benson, Nerdcore Rising, a 2008 documentary about MC Frontalot and in a supporting role in Sarah Silverman: Jesus Is Magic. Brian Posehn voices the character of Murray, a robot, in Rob Zombie's animated The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, due for release in 2009. He also voiced the character Hayashi in the English dub of Pom Poko.

Fun Fun Fun Fest 2009 Artist Spotlight: Kid Sister

Kid Sister is from Markham, IL but currently resides on Chicago's north side. She makes club rap and works at a children's clothing store slanging bibs and teething rings. Yes, her DJ (J2K of Flosstradamus) is her real brother, and yes that does rule. Together they're taking the Chicago music scene by storm, rocking parties and causing all-around dancefloor mayhem.

Kid Sister was just picked by Spin Magazine as one of the 12 "Must-Hear" acts at this year's Fun Fun Fun Fest.

FUN FUN FUN FEST ANNOUNCES ON SITE ACTIVITIES AND ATTRACTIONS

WHO: Now in its fourth year, Fun Fun Fun Fest has made a significant impact on the country’s winter calendar, successfully combining the vast worlds of indie, punk, rap, electronica and comedy while showcasing some of the city’s most unique local businesses. It is the most relaxed, laid back and (yet) progressive festival in the marketplace today, a true urban event in the middle of downtown Austin.

WHAT: In addition to Fun Fun Fun Fest’s outstanding musical line-up, the festival will also host an array of activities to keep fans busy between sets. Fans can check out the festival’s mechanical bull, skate ramp, live screen-printing, photo booth, Flip cam interviews, API poster show, band merchandise and food and fashion from some of Austin’s favorite local businesses.

Fun Fun Fun Fest has partnered up with Under Pressure (www.handsonscreenshop.com) to give festival attendees what they deserve: an opportunity to design their own FFF T-shirt, hoodie, bandana, tank top, or anything else they can come up with. Under Pressure will also be selling a limited addition FFF poster print. The API poster show will highlight various accomplished poster artists from across the United States, who will present posters on Fun Fun Fun Fest artists and others.

Fun Fun Fun Fest’s skate ramp will be rolled out by Find N Grind Skate Shop, (www.myspace.com/findngrindsk8shop), one of Central Texas' finest skate shops and crews. This year, they will host a post-apocalyptic skate session with a custom "coffin extension" on the ramp, facing the black stage in honor of the great one, Glenn Danzig.

Food and fashion will abound, as some of Austin’s favorite local businesses set up shop on festival grounds, including: Frank, Woodland, Spanish Village, Ruby’s BBQ, Snowie, Parlour Pizza, Mambo Berry, Tiff’s Treats, Boomerang’s Pies, Zen, Austin Cornucopia, Prototype, Bird’s Barbershop, Toy Joy, Big Rig Vintage and Shyana Gifts (glass pipes). Austin non-profit organizations the SIMS Foundation and Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM) will also be on hand at FFF to raise awareness of their causes benefiting local musicians.

Fuck Buttons is a two-piece experimental group based in London, England. Formed in late 2004 and signed to the ATP label, releasing the 'Tomorrow' b/w Little Bloody Shoulder' 7" single during the fall of 2007. They released their first album, Street Horrrsing, in 2008 and received widespread acclaim. A single, 'Colours Move' followed later that year.

Fun Fun Fun Fest 2009 Artist Spotlight: MC Chris

Chris Ward, otherwise known as MC Chris (always free from punctuation and capitalization), is a voice actor, rapper and improvisational comedian born September 2, 1975, in Libertyville, Illinois. His trademarks include the synthesis of his 'geek' heritage with the 'gangster' image associated with hiphop artists, and the high pitch of his voice, celebrated in his 2003 song '10 Year Old' (likening his voice to a child of ten years age). He has appeared on many of Williams Street Studios shows on Adult Swim, most notably Aqua Teen Hunger Force (as the crude and often misguided MC Pee Pants) and Sealab 2021 (in some bit parts, consistently recurring as the also crude and often misguided Hesh), and a bit part in The Brak Show. He also wrote for Sealab 2021 and The Brak Show, and later lent a track to the online music game Flash Flash Revolution. Chris has released five albums, the first of which is downloadable for free on his website. The albums are: Life's A Bitch and I'm her Pimp, Knowing is Half the Hassle, Eating's Not Cheating (and also a re-release of it), Dungeon Master of Ceremonies and MC Chris is Dead. He has recently wrapped up several successful tours across the U.S. In October of 2004, he announced his resignation from Cartoon Network to the public on his blog to focus on his recording career (roughly halfway through the entry), but has said that he is willing to return to William Street when needed. He has since toured throughout the continental United States in an effort to expose all of America to the growing genre of nerdcore rap.

Fun Fun Fun Fest 2009 Artist Spotlight: Russian Circles

Russian Circles is a three piece instrumental post-metal/post-rock band from Chicago. Similar to fellow Chicago residents Pelican, Russian Circles play epic, sprawling music which runs the gamut of heavy discordant metal to soft delicate passages. They are also known for their energetic live shows, which include tours with Tool, Red Sparowes, Minus the Bear and Daughters, as well as appearances at the 2006, 2007 & 2008 SXSW festivals. Formed in late 2004 by guitarist Mike Sullivan and bassist Colin DeKuiper (both formerly of another instrumental band Dakota/Dakota), they quickly recruited Dave Turncrantz, formerly of St. Louis band Riddle of Steel. In 2007 DeKuiper departed the band and Brian Cook (These Arms Are Snakes and Botch) took on the role of bass player for the writing and recording of their newest album, entitled 'Station' recorded in Seattle with Producer Matt Bayles. Station was released on May the 6th, 2008 on Suicide Squeeze Records.

Fun Fun Fun Fest 2009 Artist Spotlight: Crystal Castles

ORANGE STAGE // SUNDAY NOVEMBER 8TH // 7:30PM

Crystal Castles is a Toronto, Ontario, Canada based duo consisting of multi-instrumentalist Ethan Kath and vocalist Alice Glass. Named after the Crystal Castle from the She-Ra franchise, they formed in December 2003 as a project started by Kath. In April 2005, Glass recorded vocals for five original instrumentals by Kath. The band's first single was recorded 'accidentally': a microphone test by Glass was released through MySpace as 'Alice Practice' in September 2005. Glass was not aware that it had been used until record companies heard the song and contacted the duo to offer them record deals. Crystal Castles are known not only for their own efforts as a band, but also for commissioned remixes for number of groups, including 'Hunting for Witches' by Bloc Party, and 'PlayAtlantis to Interzone' by friends and label mates, Klaxons.

Fun Fun Fun Fest made its first appearance on a cold Friday evening in 2006, offering a unique approach to festival booking, filling stages with talent bubbling from the underground: what sounded great, and what was making an impact, regardless of what mainstream media said was cool. What started out as a show for a few touring acts and local favorites has become a movement --  a festival that fans and bands alike realize needs to be experienced year after year.

Now in its fourth year, Fun Fun Fun Fest has made a significant impact on the country’s winter calendar, successfully combining the vast worlds of indie, punk, rap, electronica and comedy while showcasing some of the city’s most unique local businesses. It is the most relaxed, laid back and (yet) progressive festival in the market place today, a true urban event in the middle of downtown Austin. Most importantly it’s a fest we in the music community want to go to, without all of the filler that shows up at corporate music carnivals around the world. Fun Fun Fun Fest: the fest before the fest ... where you go to see what’s about to happen as opposed to what's already been done.

Each year, fans have been treated to sets by reunited legends as well as prominent acts from across the globe at the festival. And this edition is no different – music aficionados will be eagerly awaiting performances by DEATH, The Jesus Lizard, Shonen Knife, Mission of Burma, and Danzig. Of Montreal, King Khan & BBQ Show, GZA, No Age, Young Widows, Ratatat, Yeasayer, and The Cool Kids ensure that a wide variety of relevant artists will again be on display, and as always, Austin is well represented, this year by the likes of Shearwater, Foot Patrol, Black and White Years, The Laughing, Harlem, and Strange Boys.

From The Mind of ADI #11: Fun Fun Fun Fest Recap - Day Two

As I mentioned in my Day One recap, the 2008 Fun Fun Fun Fest brought some incredible punk, hip hop, indie, electronica, and comedy acts to Waterloo Park in Austin in early November. The result was a mouthwatering buffet of an assortment of musical genres to satisfy our appetites. The stellar lineup had a fair balance of local and national talent and I was lucky enough to have the honor of interviewing a number of the artists in the Austinist media tent at the fest. The Austinist and Roxwel teamed up with Transmission Entertainment to conduct 54 (has to be some sort of record!) interviews in two days – most of the individual interviews are still being edited and will be available on Roxwel's site in due time, but we can offer a couple of early, sneak-peak recaps -- Day One and Day Two. Have a great Thanksgiving and enjoy some action from my Day Two at Fun Fest below!

On Sunday, our initial afternoon interview schedule was light so the Austinist and Roxwel early birds decided to take a walk to the Indie Stage. Til We're Blue Or Destroy really seem to be finding its feet of late and although I wasn't able to stick around for the set, I did watch them investigate a few songs during their soundcheck (pictured above). I have seen this band live quite a few times on Red River St. and the multi-faceted collective and its novel compositions seem to be getting better and better with time. Ume has been receiving rave reviews as well and Lauren Larson is a true rock star on stage. I took in quite few of Ume's crunching rock ditties before making my way back to the media tent.

I arrived at Waterloo Park bright 'n' early at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday the 8th, as evidenced above. By 10, I was enjoying The Dead Milkmen's energetic soundcheck and sticking around to ensure they made the short trip to our media tent for the first interview of the festival. The band spent a good twenty minutes with us, going over countless classic anecdotes, and their families were equally friendly, thoroughly enjoying the spotlight thrust upon their fathers and significant others.

Hear ye, Hear ye:

This weekend, at long last, Transmission is ecstatic to present the annual Fun Fun Fun Fest.
Here's some important information you'll as you head down to the event in Austin's beautiful Waterloo Park (so pay close attention, as there will be a test afterward):

THE FESTIVAL PARKING MAP
Since Waterloo Park is downtown, parking is pretty limited.  Here's a map of all nearby parking garages (first come, first served parking garages are in purple), in case you're driving:

GATE TIMES
Each day, gates will open at 11:30am and music stops at 10pm.

CARPOOL
This is highly encouraged, as (1) global warming is currently taking place and (2) parking around Waterloo Park will be limited.

BIKES
Ride your bike.  It's easier, you'll get more exercise, and the Earth won't hate you.

BIKE RACKS
Lots and lots of bike racks will be available right out front of the festival gates on Trinity Street.

AGES
The festival is all ages, but if you plan on drinking, you'll need to present a valid ID at the gate.  KIDS UNDER 10 YEARS OLD GET IN FREE.

For those of you who haven't bought your passes this year's festival, you'd best hurry.  You can get your tickets HERE.

FILMING
We will be filming both the acts and crowd on both days of the festival.  Please be aware that, by walking through the festival gates, you're saying "I'm okay with being filmed."  The video footage will be used for promotional purposes only.

Fun Fun Fun Fest Preview - Walter Schreifels/ Rival Schools

Walter Schreifels / Rival Schools
Performing Saturday on Stage Two at 3:00 (solo) and Stage One at 5:40 (Rivals Schools)

Punk rock has produced few artists as influential and prolific as Walter Schreifels. As a teenager in the late 80s he served as chief songwriter in the influential hardcore outfits Youth of Today and Gorilla Biscuits. Following the Biscuits’ demise, Schreifels formed Quicksand, helping to define the sound now known as post-hardcore. In 2000, Schreifels toned things down ever-so slightly and formed Rival Schools with fellow hardcore veterans Sammy Siegler (Judge, Shelter, Civ), Ian Love (Burn) and Cache Tolman (Civ, Iceburn). The bio keeps going – in between all these influential bands, were short-lived projects, like Project X and Walking Concert. The man just can’t stop playing music. Today, like fellow Fun Fun Fun Fest participants and punk rock legends Tim Barry and Chuck Ragan, Shreifels finds himself performing solo acoustic sets, losing none of the angst and passion that has defined his music for the past twenty years.

FunFunFun Fest 2008:  FULL LINEUP RELEASED, TICKETS ONSALE AUGUST 22

Peoples:  The cat's out of the bag.  As of today, at long last, the FunFunFun Fest '08 lineup is now public in its entirety.

For the third year in a row, we've gone all out to bring you - the Transmission community - one of the nation's most unique music festivals, incorporating a broad pallet of musical styles ranging from hardcore and punk to indie rock and hiphop.  After all, good music is just good music...plain and simple.

Tickets go on sale this Friday, August 22, through Front Gate Tickets.  We'll also be offering student discount tickets this year as part of a statewide university campus sales drive, so Texas undergrad students, stay tuned.
