Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.
Today: Justin Prater’s Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired Justin Prater from The Authors. The band turned in a scintillating set of stirring guitar-rock at FTMOA’s Residency Series show #2. And now, armed with an impressive brand new full-length, they’re primed for further glory. Head down to The Mohawk this Thursday for the official Get Haunted release party.

Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.
Today: Glynn Wedgewood’s Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired Glynn Wedgewood, previously with IV Thieves, and currently spearheading STEREO IS A LIE. Get a taste of the latter’s sizzling rock tunes at the River River on the Rocks extravaganza at The Mohawk this Saturday. The much anticipated debut full-length from STEREO IS A LIE is due later this year.

1st favorite musician or band: Probably Queen as it goes. I say that because Queen's Greatest Hits was constantly in the tape player of the car when I was a kid and I
loved hearing every song on that album, especially on those long trips
to Blackpool.

Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.
Today: William Glosup’s Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired William Glosup from The Bubbles. Catch the local band’s undeniable pop melodies at the The Mohawk this Thursday; pick up their stellar new record Daydreaming In Technicolor to boot.

1st favorite song: When I was growing up, my parents played a lot of Paul Simon in the house, and I really loved the song “Kodachrome.”

Firsts: Sh*te that happened
before other sh*te happened.
Today: George Irwin’s Firsts! This time, we examine what
inspired George Irwin from The Georgian
Company. Irwin formed the band in early 2008 from the ashes of his
previous project Just Guns. You may have
caught The Georgian Company’s stellar set at FTMOA’s
Residency Series show #3. If you missed that performance, fret not,
for you’ll get another chance to enjoy the band’s country-pop melodies
at the Maker’s Mark Red River On The Rocks shindig on
Saturday, August 28th at The Mohawk (Tickets).

1st favorite song: Before I started to explore music, I grew up
listening to a weird mix of Motown (The Supremes, The
Temptations), folk (Simon & Garfunkel, Gordon Lightfoot, Jim
Croce), country-rock (CSNY, the Eagles) and whatever
came on the oldies station.
The complete lineup for this year’s Fun Fun Fun Fest has been announced -- check it out on the official website. And enjoy clips from (previously unannounced) marquee acts such as MGMT, Bad Religion, DEVO, GWAR, Designer Drugs, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Mastodon, and A-Trak below. Get your tickets here!

From The Mind Of Adi’s First Friday Frolic – August 6th @ Club de Ville
As mentioned previously, the FTMOA show series is moving over to Club de Ville and transforming into a shindig that occurs on the first Friday of the
month (currently scheduled for August, September, and October). Doors
open at 5 p.m. for First Friday Frolic’s kickoff show on August 6th. I recommend getting there nice ‘n’ early as Austin Daily Press will have some delicious sandwich snacks waiting for you. The beloved Red River St. cart participated in a Food Network contest recently -- The Great Food Truck Race debuts August 15th. You’ll also get to enjoy some wonderfully refreshing beverages courtesy of Waialua Soda Works. As for the music, one of my favorite new bands in town, Burgess Meredith perform at 6 p.m., and the always amazing Ovenbirds headline at 7 p.m.; DJ sets by uLOVEi throughout the course of the evening as well.
A special thanks to the FTMOA event sponsors and supporters -- Austinist, uLOVEi, Giant Noise, KVRX 91.7 FM, Red River Noise and Waialua Soda Works.

High On Fire, Dwarves, RJD2, The Hold Steady
High On Fire, Dwarves, RJD2, and The Hold Steady will all perform at the 2010 Fun Fun Fun Fest. Enjoy a clip from each artist below; head over to the official Fun Fest website to check out yet another epic video pertaining to today’s announcement.
Snapcase, Dirty Projectors, Cap’n Jazz, Yelle, The Gories
The next set of acts performing at this year’s Fun Fun Fun Fest have been announced! Check out a choice YouTube clip of each artist below and head on over to the Fun Fest website to watch yet another hilarious video pertaining to this release.

Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.
Today: Laurie Gallardo’s Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired KUT 90.5 FM legend Laurie Gallardo. This amazing lady hosts KUT favorites like Austin Music Minute and Laurie’s Town, and also produces Texas Music Matters. Wish her Happy Birthday at The Mohawk this Saturday; enjoy performances by STEREO IS A LIE, The Midgetmen, and whole host of other talented bands to boot. Fête d'Lorenza is presented by whitesiren -- head over to Do512 for more details and get your tickets via FrontGate. Or scope out the fabulous poster by James Brown (Left Brain Creativ) further below for the full lineup.

Suicidal Tendencies, Slick Rick, and Best Coast
The complete Fun Fun Fun Fest won’t be released till next month (it will be well worth the wait!), but for the next few weeks, starting today, we’re leaking three bands each Friday. The fifth edition of Fun Fest will take place at Waterloo Park this November.
I am really stoked that Suicidal Tendencies are coming! My grandma unwittingly gave me Lights…Camera…Revolution! for my birthday in 1991. (She entrusted my cousin to buy me a couple of cassettes of my choice for my birthday that year -- I picked ST and Anthrax’ Among The Living…if only she knew!) I used to love that album all through the early ‘90s (and beyond) so I am naturally thrilled to have a chance to catch them live in concert. And of course, I’m pretty excited that legendary rapper Slick Rick and one of my favorite new bands Best Coast are on the bill as well!
Head over to the Fun Fest website to watch a hilarious video pertaining to this breaking news.

Pixel Pop: A Fusion of Art, Fashion and Music -- Friday, July 16th @ The Mohawk
A couple of months ago, From The Mind Of Adi, Electric Promotions, and Team Fabrication decided to put on their thinking caps and come up with a cohesive shindig that combines their biggest passions. Pixel Pop, scheduled to take place on Friday, July 16th at The Mohawk, is the result of those brainstorming sessions. We're excited to present this original event that brings together the wonderful worlds of art, fashion, and music. Doors open at 9:30 p.m. and cover charge is set at $5 ($7 for minors).
Team Fab's Jen Rea and Erin Mikulenko are set to present a comic book inspired fashion collection, and local illustrator Chad Townsend will offer up an original art display at the event. Additionally, Jeannine Schafer and other Austin artists will be sketching on site as well. As for the music, outside, Candi and The Strangers and The Happen-Ins will entertain the masses, while later, inside, The Bubbles will bring down the curtain. Plus, DJ sets by uLOVEi throughout the course of the evening so bring those dancing shoes. And naturally, we’d love for you to treasure this evening’s memories forever. We’ve procured the services of not one, but two of our fabulous photog friends. Be sure to stop by both Annie Ray’s and Trevor Ray Thompson’s comic book themed photo-booths for a choice picture, or four.
Portions of the proceeds from the door will benefit HAAM, a local entity that ensures all musicians in town have access to affordable healthcare.
Finally, a big thank you to all our sponsors -- Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Graham’s Texas Tea, Yelp, Birds Barbershop, Blue Note Bakery, Sirens Salon, Dynamic Reprographics, The WonderCraft, Sublime Stitching, 302 Designs, Jinxedaposed Clothing, Austin Aztex FC, TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls, and Austin Visual Arts Association.

From The Mind Of Adi Residency Series Show #7 -- Wednesday, June 9th @ The Mohawk
Join me this Wednesday at The Mohawk for the Residency Series’ penultimate show. Yes, after the two June dates, the event is shifting gears just a tad. The shindig is moving next door to the cozy confines of Club de Ville and will take place on the first Friday of each month, beginning in August. First Friday Frolic officially kicks off on August 6th -- doors at 5 p.m., bands at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., and DJ sets before, in-between, and after. More on that soon, but for now, make your way to the 'hawk for another installment of the Residency Series this Wednesday. Enjoy performances by The Frontier Brothers, Seaholm Electric, and Invisible Inks, scrumptious snacks from Frank, and the consistently amazing art show put on by Deep in the Art of Texas. And that’s not all! I’ll be giving away two pairs of free tickets to Austin Aztex’ match on June 12th at House Park. Come on down and share your favorite World Cup memory with me for a chance to win!

Today: Mike Hernandez’ Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired local blog The Peen Scene’s founder and editor Mike Hernandez. Join Mike Peen and The Peen Scene this Sunday at Barbarella and End Bar//Biker Gallery for a massive birthday celebration in honor of Jenifer DeVito (Mike’s wife, the photographer for the blog, and a.k.a. Jen Peen) -- full details here.
1st favorite song: Tough one. Not necessarily because of the
numerous songs that I grew up loving, but because I also grew up loving
weed. My short term memory probably peaked around age five. However,
I'm gonna say it was probably "Empty Garden" by Elton John. Yes, my ex-marine dad is responsible for my love of old Elton John.

From The Mind Of Adi Residency Series Show #5 -- Wednesday, May 12th @ The Mohawk
We’re halfway into From The Mind Of Adi’s Spring 2010 Residency Series at The Mohawk, and so far, we’ve enjoyed many stellar local bands, tons of brilliant art, and a considerable amount of amazing food. Four more shows to go so plenty of good times still await. I am pleased to announce that Woodland is on board for May and will be supplying some delicious snacks at the two shows this month. This Wednesday, the folks from Pachanga Latino Music Festival and Giant Noise will give away two pairs of general admission tickets and one pair of V.I.P. tickets to Pachanga at Fiesta Gardens (May 21st and 22nd) during the course of the evening. We’ll also be chatting on camera with Pachanga producers Rich Garza and Alex Vallejo. And Deep In The Art Of Texas is back with another art show upstairs.
As for the music, The White Hotel will be on first at 7 p.m., Royal Forest (formerly Loxsly) is next up at 8 p.m., and The Hi-Tones headline at 9 p.m. This evening is the tour kickoff for The Hi-Tones’ month long jaunt; they will be performing in Arkansas, Tennessee, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan, before returning to Texas to play the May 26th FTMOA residency show.
Finally, a big thank you to Austinist, uLOVEi, 512 Unscripted, and KVRX 91.7 FM for their continued support for the FTMOA residency series.

Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.
Today: Marc Perlman’s Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired Marc Perlman from The Midgetmen. The local band celebrates eight years of boisterous pop-punk at The Mohawk this Saturday; doors for The Midgetmen’s 8th Anniversorry open at 8pm. Perlman was kind enough to offer up a little prelude to
his responses – “Since rock and roll is a young man's game, all these
questions (along with my rapidly greying temples) are going to expose
me as an old man. For the mathematically adept, our eight year anniversorry marks the fact that I've spent 25% of my life in the goddamned
Midgetmen. On the other hand, I'm still the youngest member of The
Midgetmen so I guess I won't complain too much."

1st favorite song: Somewhere along the line, at around 6th grade, “Wipe Out” (The Surfaris) became the best song I'd ever heard. I have no clue why though. Before that, I was strictly obsessed with “Beat It” (Michael Jackson) for five or more years.

From The Mind Of Adi Residency Series Show #4 -- Wednesday, April 28th @ The Mohawk
From The Mind Of Adi’s residency series continues this evening at The Mohawk (doors at 6pm). The blood-themed English Teeth performance on the 14th was nothing short of epic; tonight, the band will be fueled by fire and I’m expecting another spectacular set. Missions, a talented trio comprised of Josh Mills (Clap!Clap!), Markus Diffee (DJ Markus with a K), and Amber Zook, precede the Teef at 8pm, and the rascals known as the C-Tezz All Stars get things going at 7pm. Like last time, Deep In The Art Of Texas presents an art show on the top deck (lighting provided by Midnight Lighting) -- be sure to walk upstairs to check out the wares on display from a whole slew of talented local artists. Frank will also be set up on the patio with plenty of tasty treats. uLOVEi will be on hand to document all the revelry as always, and I’m pleased to announce that KVRX 91.7 FM has joined in as a sponsor of the FTMOA residency series. And a special thanks to my beloved Austinist and 512 Unscripted for their continued support.

From The Mind Of Adi Party on March 16th
So we all know about that festival in town in mid-March every year. Five nights of amazing, “official” live music. And ten days of unofficial, irrepressible revelry. Not too shabby at all. 65daysofstatic, The Strange Boys, Sixteen Deluxe, High On Fire, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Frightened Rabbit, The Walkmen, Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings, Spoon, The Coathangers (to name a few) are all scheduled to perform at official SXSW showcases. And that’s just on Wednesday. Check out the full listings by day on SX’s site -- Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Of course, there are tons of unofficial events -- I am compiling this massive list on Austinist. From The Mind Of Adi’s party will take place at Chupacabra Cantina on the 16th. I have teamed up with Couch Professor Entertainment for this shindig -- RSVP on Do512 to get in for free. The outside stage will feature live sets by Peter and the Wolf, Frank Smith, Booher and the Turkeys, The Frontier Brothers, Harper Blynn, and Blind Tactic, while DJ Car Stereo (Wars), DJ Gmau, DJ Czech One, and Adam Warped pilot the beats inside all night long. Hope to see you there!

Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.
Today: Ryan Cano’ Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired Ryan Cano, owner of The Loyalty Firm,
a management and publicity company based right here in Austin. TLF’s
roster currently includes two extremely talented local bands, The Boxing Lesson and My Education -- catch the former at Stubb’s (Inside) tonight and check out the latter on Saturday at Emo’s (Outside).
1st favorite song: I remember music always being around but I
don’t think I started formulating favorites until I was maybe 3 years
old. I remember loving Michael Jackson a bunch. "Beat it" may have been my first favorite song. But I also remember loving Duran Duran's “Rio” and “Hungry Like The Wolf” shortly after.
Adi-Fest 2 ½ this Friday at Beauty Bar!
Join me this Friday at Beauty Bar for Adi-Fest 2 ½. I have teamed up with local entity Knuckle Rumbler for this shindig. The wonderful folks at KR actually put on the first Adi Fest two years; last year’s Adi-Fest II ended up being quite a memorable birthday party, complete with kebabs at 1 a.m. and a lost tooth at 1:45 a.m. Austin’s beloved Queen cover band Magnifico, ZZ Top tribute act Cheap Sunglasses and Jimi Hendrix devotees the Stonefree Experience Band will all perform at the 2 ½ edition this Friday. Alison Narro will be there to capture all the shenanigans -- fútbol and tennis shirts are encouraged. Birds Barbershop has also partnered with us on this event so come early for some complimentary beverages, and don’t forget to RSVP on Do512 for $5 entry.

Today: Christian Bland’s Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired Christian Bland, prolific local musician and purveyor of all things psychedelic. If you didn’t make it to last year’s edition, pick up the brand new Austin Psych Fest 2 DVD to see what you missed; catch Bland and the Revelators at The Mohawk tomorrow night for free.

The latest installment of the Holiday Party takes place this Saturday at United States Art Authority, next to Spider House, and features legendary Austin bands like Windsor For The Derby and …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, along with current favorites such as The Black.

1st favorite song: Pointer Sisters’ “Pinball Number Count” from Sesame Street.

Firsts: Sh*te that happened before other sh*te happened.
Today: JG Wilkes’ Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired Jonnie Wilkes (a.k.a. JG Wilkes), one half of the Scottish duo that goes by the moniker Optimo Espacio. Optimo Espacio is actually a club night, started by Wilkes and Keith McIvor (a.k.a. DJ Twitch) in 1997 at The Sub Club in Glasgow, Scotland. The two have built quite a reputation for the
event, hosting many relevant touring acts such as LCD Soundsystem and
Franz Ferdinand while also nurturing a vibrant local scene.
Unsurprisingly, Wilkes and McIvor are the resident DJs at their
shindigs but they do hit the road from time to time -- this Thursday, Learning Secrets is bringing Optimo Espacio to Austin -- RSVP here for $3 admission into the inevitable dance party at Beauty Bar.

The weather on day one was just perfect but insistent rain and treacherous terrain made for a wet and slippery Sunday at the 2009 Fun Fun Fun Fest. Austinist’s interviews in the media tent kept me busy on day two as well but I was able to witness the legend of Danzig along with a few other acts. Later in the evening, sets by The King Khan & BBQ Show and Forgetters at Red 7ensured my Fun Fest '09 experience ended just right. Again, my personal pictures only reflect the goings-ons in and around the media tent but please scan through the various Flickr sets containing the brilliant work of a handful of gifted Austinist photographers who captured a lot more of the festival action.

Another Fun Fun Fun Fest is over and yet again, it was a truly amazing and enjoyable two days of
music, comedy, food, drink, friends and, yes, endless fun. As always, Austinist conducted a whole slew of interviews in the media tent and I was
committed to those all weekend, but thankfully, I was able to get away
to catch the likes of Foot Patrol, DEATH, and The Jesus Lizard on day one. However, my photographs below can only portray the
happenings in the media tent and surrounding areas of the festival. For
the best performance pictures and more, I have compiled the Flickr sets of some extremely talented Austinist photographers. Enjoy!

Another Austin City Limits Music Festival has come and gone, leaving me, as always, with tired legs, ringing ears and a plethora of memories. And muddy flip-flops that may not be salvaged. 1st favorite song: I think it was "Careless Whisper" by Wham! (The exclamation point is part of their name; I'm not using it to indicate excitement). I used to pretend my G.I. Joe men were having deep emotional moments right before dying in battle. I
rewound the tape and played it again and again while the soldiers died
in each other's arms.

1st favorite song: Probably the seldom-heard Elton John ode to girls and Crocodylidae called "Crocodile Rock". I was 5. I remember my dad playing it in our living room and it would be one big dance party with me jumping up and down, singing the "nahhhhh, na na na nuh nahhhhhh" part really loudly. The first girl I ever had a really big crush on was named Suzy, too. I still hate her.

From The Mind Of Adi: Adi-Fest II Recap
The highlights of my birthday party at The Mohawk last Friday are captured below courtesy of photographs by Nash Cook, Cynthia Rodriquez, and others. BreakThru Radio, out of NYC, is doing its bit in bringing the best independent music to the internet airwaves by allowing regular people (like me!) to play (almost) anything we’d like. BTR hit me up to start an Austin music show for its website in late 2007. Since early 2008, I have been hosting River Runs Red, an hour showcasing the best music from Austin, from The Mohawk to Antone’s (and beyond), and from White Denim to Grupo Fantasma (and beyond). Transmission Entertainment was kind enough to post information about the show on this site in July '08 (a couple of weeks before From The Mind Of Adi’s launch in August '08).
Earlier this week, the twelfth edition of River Runs Red hit BTR. Check it out via BTR’s website and jam out to past River Runs Red shows (further) below.

Today: James Moody’s Firsts! This time, we examine what inspired James Moody, co-owner of The Mohawk through the years. Moody is a legend to many of us but anything I write about him (genius, icon, did I say legend already?) would not sum him up as well as this blurb on his own Facebook page – “rambler. rhinestone cowboy. wanderer. spelunker. spirit animal. chief. home skillet. mule. mega. tonto.” Enough said.
