So goddamn excited about this years Free Week (Notice how I capitalized "Free Week" and not "god?" It's THAT amazing a week!).
I started this bad boy some years ago (maybe 6 or so?) at Emos as a way to get people to come out during the slow time of the year when nobody was touring, as well as just bring something fun to do when everyone was still off work and the kids out of school for the end of the holidays. It grew from there within Emos, but for some reason, other clubs never really tried to do it. When I left Emos after being there almost a decade, I kept the ball rolling and started doing it at a number of venues, including some of Transmission's main rooms: Mohawk, Red 7, Club Deville, etc. Emos, of course, had continued to book it themselves and do their own version of Free Week and a few other clubs did a few free shows last year, but THIS year it seems like everyone has jumped in feet first, which is killer. Parish said they're doing free week, Stubbs mentioned maybe doing their inside room for free week, Beerland is doing some as well, Beauty Bar is free all week (djs AND live music), our rooms (Red 7, Mohawk, Deville) and others are all participating and now it really IS becoming our local version of Sxsw with all local bands playing up and down the street. You can pop into one room for an hour and run to another club to catch another band. Red River and beyond has become ground zero for the live music lovers of local music in town and it's a great way for them to showcase themselves and clubs to showcase their space as well....all with NO cost to the fans. It's a giant party and everyone is invited, which was always the points and really cool to see it happen this way! This thing seems unique to Austin. The same way 1st Thursday on South Congress and other sort of organic event happen in Austin around local businesses, press and artists, without the support of the city or support of a big business, this continues to keep happening in Austin and the reason we all move here and stay. Shit I was born here and still see no reason to leave. Events like this are part of that...
We thank the bands so much for donating their time and hopefully they'll have as much fun doing it as everyone else will. See you guys Jan 1st through Jan 10th!

It's happening again. The "Soul Happening." AKA, the place to get down this Friday night.
Four (4) DJs, masters of the wheels of steel, churning out a long, sweaty night of soul, funk and boogaloo. Killer jams. Throw down.
Tickets for this event will be sold at the door. The music starts at 9pm. More info here.

We’ve seen that instrumental post-rock can be uplifting (Explosions in the Sky), ennui-inducing (Mogwai), disconcerting (Godspeed You! Black Emperor) or downright roaring (Pelican). But can it be fun? At least as much fun as the drummer’s picture on Gifts From Enola’s MySpace page?
Gifts From Enola seem to be on a mission to prove it. Their self-released album Loyal Eyes Betrayed the Mind (self-released 2006) was recorded in a dorm room at James Madison University in Virginia, and that youthful optimism shines through, while the recent split album with You.May.Die.In.the.Desert, Harmonic Motion: Volume 1 (Differential 2008), furthers the cause. Their sound is injected with metallic peaks that descend into jazzy textures, making you want to get up and move. Meanwhile, the atmospheric numbers exhale with an attention-getting sigh that signals intrigue in the air. Skilled technical musicians who are clearly versed in rock history, they kick that “post” out from the ground and let the songs run free, the usual leashes flailing in the wind behind them.
Any band that plays instrumental music yet blatantly lists their influences as Pabst Blue Ribbon obviously has a certain tongue in cheek joie de vivre. No fuckin’ Heineken for them. We’ll see how the post-rock party translates live.
They'll be playing tonight under those big flashing lights at Club De Ville.
