I’m pleased to honor local blog Red River Noise, a staunch supporter of the series from day one, at this month’s installment of First Friday Frolic. This July edition will actually be a farewell of sorts – there are some major changes afoot at Red River Noise (details TBA at the Frolic). Furthermore, I’m going to be taking a break from the First Friday Frolic adventure to concentrate on few new projects, including Soundboard and Hard Stuff. But not before one more hurrah at Club de Ville on July 1st.
Come on down at 5 p.m. for an ice cold beverage from Waialua Soda Works and tasty snacks from Beanitos. You’ll receive a now-customary raffle ticket at the door for your chance to win passes to various shows at The Mohawk. And this time, we’re also giving away a copy of the new Man Man album Life Fantastic on vinyl courtesy of Anti-. Naan Stop, a brand new Indian cuisine food cart in town, will have delicious Indian treats for sale in the parking lot.
As for the entertainment, enjoy live sets by two of Austin’s finest young talents Fresh Millions (7 p.m.) and Tactics (6 p.m.), along with the effervescent uLOVEi’s ever-stimulating DJ sets.
A special thanks to the FTMOA event sponsors and supporters -- Austinist, uLOVEi, Giant Noise, KVRX 91.7 FM, Red River Noise and Waialua Soda Works.

This time, First Frolic Frolic pays homage to Caravan Interactive. The company, based out of Brooklyn and Austin, specializes in developing highly interactive iPhone, iPad, Android, and Blackberry applications. Some of their noteworthy clients include Women’s Wear Daily, Human Right Watch International Film Festival, Maroon 5, Men’s Health Magazine, and L'Oréal Redken.
Mmmpanadas will have some tasty treats for sale in the de Ville parking lot – check out their menu here. The brainchild of husband-and-wife team Cody and Kristen Fields, mmmpanadas began as a truck business in 2007. Now, their gourmet empanadas can be found in local bars and coffee shops. And in the de Ville parking lot this evening.
Inside, grab a complimentary Waialua Soda Works beverage and enjoy live sets by Luison at 6 p.m. and Afrofreque at 7 p.m., along with DJ uLOVEi’s selections at regular intervals. Hope to see you there!

This month’s First Frolic Frolic salutes hilarious local website Lamebook. An undeniable time-suck but an unavoidable avenue for my every day escape from reality, Lamebook publishes some of the funniest and most epic stuff ever from Facebook.
It’s not all fun and games though – Lamebook is still fighting FB in court. I’ll have a donation jar set up at de Ville, should you wish to contribute to their cause. Come on down (doors at 5 p.m.) and get an update on the legal battle from the creators. Or discuss in detail the Lame Category you choose most often. And while you’re at it, enjoy live sets by Rayon Beach and Royal Forest, along with DJ uLOVEi’s choice selections (request “Friday” to drive him crazy!).
Inspired by the Mini Cannonball Run Grub Crawl I was a part of last month, I have decided to invite different local food carts to set up in the de Ville parking lot for Frolics going forward. Our first Frolic cart is East Side Drive-In based Ugly Banjos. Cousins Michael Hegar and Matthew Schaefer comprise the brain-trust behind this little trailer which specializes in Texas comfort food and finished in the top three in the aforementioned grub crawl for their quite amazing Shrimp & Grits dish. Since this Friday is the last day of my three-week cleanse, I may just hafta indulge. As always, there will be complimentary ice-cold Waialua Soda Works beverages available inside de Ville. Hope you can make it!

Beloved local company Gowalla, fresh off an epic SX shindig, takes centre-stage at the April edition of First Friday Frolic. Gowalla has become quite ubiquitous here in Austin and beyond since its inception in 2007. If you’re friends with me on Facebook, you’ve probably grown sick of my plentiful check-ins. Be that as it may, I’d like to set the record straight that I don’t get paid by the company to check-in at five places a day as has been rumored! (Take that Matthew Odam.) The mobile app is especially useful in helping me easily find my friends (and vice versa) during those late night jaunts on Red River St.; the intriguing trips and nifty collectibles add a welcome flair to the whole experience. My regular passport could only dream of the many adventures now reflecting on my Gowalla passport.
Club de Ville doors open right at 5 p.m. on the 1st; the measly $3 cover charge includes treats from downtown eatery Blue Ribbon Barbecue (they best bring some of that banana pudding), refreshments from Waialua Soda Works, plus opportunities to win brand new Gowalla shirts (no joke there). The White White Lights at 6 p.m. and A Giant Dog at 7 p.m. furnish the soundtrack, along with our resident DJ uLOVEi. Hope to see you there!

In the last few years, the lean mean party machine known as Knuckle Rumbler has undeniably left its mark on the city via original events like the Versus series, regular festival time Rumbler Lounge throwdowns, and its increasingly popular new year’s eve Crumple Blunder shindig. Spearheaded by Aaron Berkowitz and Jill Sorrels, this versatile team prides itself in working with musicians from all genres and has even indulged my affinity for tribute bands in the past.
This month’s First Friday Frolic rightfully pays tribute to these party brokers. “Knuckle Rumbler Night” features live sets by Not In The Face! and Crooks, two of our favorite bands in town at the moment, along with DJ sets by the redoubtable renaissance man uLOVEi. Come on down at 5 p.m. and enjoy delicious snacks from Tacos & Tequila and all-you-can-drink beverages from Waialua Soda Works. Stay late for FTMOA Residency Series alumni The Hi-Tones’ EP release and tour kickoff immediately following the Frolic.
Finally, a big thank you to everyone who made it out to last week’s Frank Rec Room; the weekly series rolls on this Wednesday with Radar Radar and Mike and the Moonpies, and next Wednesday with Zlam Dunk and The Boxing Lesson.

After taking a brief break for wedding related trips and what not, I am pleased to announce the return of FTMOA’s First Friday Frolic. The monthly shindig returns to Club de Ville on January 7th for a special 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. Free Week edition devoted to promising non-profit AMP (Austin Music People). Come on down for an evening of excellent local music, complimentary pizza courtesy of Home Slice, retro, “made with real sugar” Big Red, and giveaways from Howler Brothers. You’ll also get a chance to learn more about this new organization in town, and (hopefully) sign up as member. Stay abreast of AMP’s activities in 2011 (and beyond) via Twitter.

From The Mind Of Adi’s First Friday Frolic – October 1st @ Club de Ville
Ultra8201 is undoubtedly one of the best music blogs in Austin. The founder, my good friend Richard Gonzalez is one heck of a guy and serves our community unfailingly via the blog. We have a pretty similar taste in music so it only made sense that I partner up with him for the next First Friday Frolic. Ultra8201 Night, set to take place next Friday (October 1st) at Club de Ville, features the redoubtable veteran pop outfit 'Til We’re Blue Or Destroy along with Politics, who have genuinely impressed me the times I’ve seen them live. As always, uLOVEi will furnish the soundtrack before, in between, and after the live performances. I’m happy to announce that Carlos Santana and Chef Roberto Santibañez’ restaurant Maria Maria has jumped on board to provide complimentary snacks this evening. We’ll also have more of those delicious beverages from Waialua Soda Works, chilled to perfection. Hope to see you there! Check out the pictures from the previous First Friday Frolic (Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau & Double Stereo Night) here.
The series will be taking a break after next Friday’s Ultra8201 Night. Fun Fun Fun Fest kicks off on the first Friday of November -- naturally, I encourage everyone to head out to Waterloo Park to catch the legendary “Weird Al” Yankovic in action. And the revelry continues in full force on Saturday, November 6th, and Sunday, November 7th. Check out the lineup for each day here and get your tickets here. Following Fun Fest, I’m heading to India for my wedding; First Friday Frolic will resume early 2011.

From The Mind Of Adi’s First Friday Frolic – September 3rd @ Club de Ville
FTMOA's First Friday Frolic series hosts its ACVB and Double Stereo night on September 3rd at Club de Ville. The Austin Music Office, a division of The Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau, will be celebrating the launch of its new music microsite, powered by Double Stereo. Local bands are encouraged to create a profile and add their music, bio, and merchandise to the site; tourists (and residents) will be able to check out these Austin artists, buy their music, and of course, make plans accordingly to attend a performance. The site will eventually serve as a comprehensive database for Austin acts, and in due time, should be a priceless resource for information on these musicians.
Doors open at 5 p.m. on the 3rd. We’ll have some food from Frank and beverages from Waialua Soda Works waiting for the early-birds. uLOVEi’s reliable selection of music, and live sets from Hard Proof Afrobeat and Bus Stop Stallions comprise the scheduled entertainment for the evening.
Thanks to everyone who came down for kickoff show on August 6th. See you next Friday for the second installment of the series!
A special thanks to the FTMOA event sponsors and supporters -- Austinist, uLOVEi, Giant Noise, KVRX 91.7 FM, Red River Noise and Waialua Soda Works.
