Long
weekend – no desire to write a cheesy opening paragraph. On with the
show, as they say. Here are your MONDAY TRANSMISSIONS for the week of
August 25, 2008.
Monday: The Mohawk recently started “Metal Mondays” – come hang and bang your head. Or hit up Red 7 for some punky pop music with NorTexans Kid Liberty and A Bird A Sparrow. Chicago’s A Kidnap in Color round out this matinee lineup. Bring your little sister, or underage girlfriend, if you’ve got one. [No advance tickets available]

Bummed about being back at school? Drink away your sorrows students, drink ‘em all away, at Beauty Bar Monday. The “Back To School, Alright!” Party features two stages of music – definitely not the most dancey lineup
you’ll see at Beauty Bar but fun nonetheless. Inside you’ve got Peel, White White Lights and Sad Accordians, while the patio hosts Belaire, AM Syndicate, and Future Clouds and Radar. Come early for free pizza and vodka from sponsors Hoboken Pie (best pizza downtown, definitely) and 42 Below. [No advance tickets available]

Crystal Antlers performing at The Mohawk on 6.27.08. This was a show opening for Matt & Kim on the Fuck Yeah Tour. Later in the night, Crystal Antlers played an afterparty on the Pfluger Bridge over Town Lake in downtown Austin (along with Team Robespierre and Death Set). Instruments were powered by a little gas generator. It was pretty cool 'til the cops showed up and laid down the law at about 4am. Filmed by Eric Guzman.

The Fleet Foxes, performing live to a sold out audience at The Mohawk in Austin on July 2nd. Filmed by Eric Guzman and Joel Cavazos. Check out Sub Pop for more on these guys.

This is your first weekly installment of MONDAY TRANSMISSIONS,
a regular column providing the Transmission community with useful
information & opinion on upcoming shows of interest taking place
throughout the Austin underground.
I’m starting to fall in love with Metal Mondays on ME. Last week I saw videos from locals Pack of Wolves and Set Aflame followed by Pig Destroyer, High on Fire and Red 7 veterans Goatwhore (yep, I said Goatwhore). Seriously – why go out on a Monday when at home I’ve got beer and metal on ME? Why ever leave the house when such entertainment – I mean, come on, we’re talking Goatwhore here, people – is at my fingertips? I can always just call the grocery store to have my groceries delivered.

Just
kidding. Really. Go out and support your downtown Austin economy.
Get out of the house. Disengage from the television. Save yourself.
Video for "Arms Against Atrophy" by Titus Andronicus, off of their debut LP, Airing of Grievances (Troubleman Unlimited, 2008). Titus Andronicus plays The Mohawk this Friday with Austin's The Midgetmen opening. Tickets and show info are here.
Video for Earlimart's "We Drink on the Job," a track from their 2003 LP Everyone Down Here (Palm Pictures).

Ladies and gentlemen, start your Technics - it’s down to three DJs in the fourth and final round of The DJ Melee: student-of-the-world the Giant Hornets from Japan, designer of all things graphic and sonic DJ Starsign, and self-described “coolest Ape in space” BIGFACE.
w/ Math The Band, Jason Anderson, Fishboy + Uncle Monsterface
Check out this video our friends put together. The Fuck Yeah '08 Tour - which hit The Mohawk in Austin on June 27 - runs on grease. Literally. Cooking grease, to be exact. Here's footage of the guys filling their diesel tourbus with used kitchen grease at The Woodland Restaurant on South Congress in Austin the day after the show. Cameo appearance by Transmission's own Graham Williams.
w/ Jacuzzi Boys + Wine and Revolution
w/The Dutchess & The Duke, Balmorhea & The Lovely Sparrows (inside b/w sets and late night after Fleet Foxes)
Last nights show was amazing. Big up to all of the bands and to Sean for putting together a great showcase. We will have more photos and videos from this event once we all wake up. Stay tuned.

Here are some photos from last nite's show from local blog Sounds Like Austin:

Deathset, Team Robespierre, Brother Reade. Keith Morris, and more
Complete with dual necks, orange stacks, and custom smoke machines, Boris returns to the Mohawk to blow the Red River power grid into little pieces of smoldering stoner metal alloy. This video was filmed at last years Mohawk show by our friend Gates Bradley. In other news, Austin Energy had to purchase more electricity from the world in order to service the extreme energy needs this Saturday.
Dont miss openers Torche and Clouds

School of Language is the sideproject of Field Music's David Brewis. As part of the Retread Sessions, presented at the Mohawk in Austin, TX, by our friends at KUT 90.5 FM, Brewis got some breathing room to do some reconstructed versions of the tracks from Sea From Shore, his debut full-length release. Here's "Western Holiday." Thanks to KUT and Super!Alright! for making this one happen.
Presented by Transmission Entertainment and ordained by the holy gods of guitar rock, El Paso Hot Button played the Mohawk in Austin, TX, on May 31, 2008, opening for Austin locals UME and Those Peabodys. If you haven't heard this one-man guitar & drum assault, it's high time you did. This guy brings style & power to the traditional one-man-band approach at long last. Cheggit:
Oh yeah, we should also mention that El Paso Hot Button does his own smoke machine work, triggered throughout his performance with a foot pedal. How awesome is that.

If the above album cover doesn't pique your interest (even a little bit) I'd say your blind. Sometimes an album drops at the perfect time - and this one, which was released last week via Vice records, is the perfect summer listen. Welcome to the new bizarre: The Supreme Genius of King Khan.
GOOD NEWS: You can catch them live at the Mohawk in Austin on Sunday the 6th.
Listen:
MP3: King Khan & The Shrines - Welfare Bread
MP3: King Khan & The Shrines - Torture

We had to comment on this one. Austin local homies and FFF Fest veterans, Britt and gang gave the Mohawk a nod and chose to play a secret Spoon show last year on the outside stage. Luckily, Prototype pimped it with vintage lights and shiny things. The Mohawk and Austin Spoon lovers responded by capturing a fan shot (see beastie boys) 25 camera shoot. Super Alright had the daunting task of editing it. There is still a bucket of DV tapes lying around on the cutting room floor from this great show...thanks to all that joined in to make it happen.
